Gold steady as focus turns to US inflation data

gold gold rates

Gold prices held steady on Tuesday as the dollar eased, while investors looked forward to key US inflation data that could offer clues on how soon the Federal Reserve can cut interest rates.

Spot gold was flat at $2,350.85 per ounce, as of 0350 GMT, after rising about 1% in the previous session.

“A very strong dollar picture supported by a change in the US monetary policy stance where the Fed starts looking for evidence to kick start interest rate hikes instead of easing could be a major risk as we could see a further corrective move in spot gold,” said Kelvin Wong, a senior market analyst for Asia Pacific at OANDA.

However, in the short term, spot gold is still more skewed towards the positive side rather than the negative side and $2,310 is a key short-term support for this week, Wong added.

The core personal consumption expenditures price index (PCE), the Fed’s preferred inflation measure, is due on Friday.

Read more: Gold rates witnesses increase in Pakistan

Fed meeting minutes released last week showed that the policy response, for now, would involve maintaining the benchmark policy rate at its current level but also reflected discussions of possible further hikes.

Traders’ bets indicated rising scepticism that the US central bank will lower rates more than once in 2024, currently pricing in about a 62% chance of a rate cut by November according to the CME FedWatch Tool.

Bullion is known as an inflation hedge, but higher rates increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding gold.

Vietnam’s central bank will stop auctioning gold in the domestic market and launch a new measure to stabilise domestic prices, it said on Monday.
Spot silver rose 0.2% to $31.73, platinum was up 0.4% to $1,058.50 and palladium gained 0.2% to $991.18.

Pakistan welcomes new ICJ ruling against Israel

Pakistan welcomes new ICJ ruling against Israel

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Saturday welcomed a new ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordering Israel to immediately halt its military offensive in Rafah.

The ICJ amended an earlier order and demanded Israel immediately halt its military offensive in Rafah, a city in southern Gaza where Tel Aviv sent forces May 6.

“Israel must immediately hold its military offensive or any other action in the Rafah governorate which may inflict on the Palestinian group in Gaza, conditions of life that could bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part,” said ICJ President Nawaf Salam, as he read the order on additional provisional measures requested by South Africa in the genocide case against Israel.

In a statement, FO spokesperson said: “Pakistan supports the application filed by South Africa before the ICJ against Israel under the 1948 Genocide Convention, in follow up to which the Court has announced additional provisional measures.

“As required by the latest ruling of ICJ, Israeli occupation authorities should keep the Rafah crossing open for unhindered provision of humanitarian assistance, and ensure unimpeded access to the Gaza Strip of any commission of inquiry, fact-finding mission or other investigative body mandated by the United Nations to investigate allegations of genocide,” she added.

The statement further demanded immediate and unconditional implementation of the latest orders of the ICJ against Israel as well as the previous orders of 26 January and 28 March.

“We call on the UN Security Council to play its role in ending Israel’s ongoing brutal military campaign across Gaza; allowing unhindered flow of humanitarian assistance; taking effective measures to protect civilians in Gaza; and holding Israel accountable for its crimes,” it reads.

It said that Pakistan reaffirmed its unwavering support for the inalienable right to self-determination of the Palestinians for a viable, secure, contiguous and sovereign State of Palestine on the basis of the pre-1967 borders and with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.

PM lauds ICJ’ decision

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday reaffirming Pakistan’s strong commitment to the just struggle of the Palestinian people, lauded the International Court of Justice (ICJ)’s decision to order Israel to stop its assault on Gaza and Rafah.

“We hope the oppressed people of Kashmir would receive similar attention from the international community, as they too have been enduring brutal occupation and denial of fundamental human rights for the last seven decades,” the prime minister said on his official X timeline.

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Iran’s top diplomat also dies in crash

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Iran's top diplomat, President Ebrahim Raisi

TEHRAN: Iranian foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, who has died in a helicopter crash along with president Ebrahim Raisi, was known for his fierce anti-Israel sentiment and scepticism of the West.

A career diplomat and conservative figure with close ties to the Revolutionary Guards, Amir-Abdollahian took office following Raisi’s 2021 election win.

State media at the time hailed his support for “the resistance axis”, Tehran-aligned armed groups across the Middle East arrayed against arch-foe Israel.

Amir-Abdollahian’s tenure as Iran’s top diplomat was marked by intensified diplomatic activity to end Iran’s isolation and offset the impact of crippling US sanctions.

He particularly sought to forge between relations with the Islamic republic’s Arab neighbours including regional Sunni Muslim powerhouse Saudi Arabia.

In a landmark Chinese-brokered deal, Tehran and Riyadh agreed in March 2023 to restore ties and reopen their respective embassies.

Amir-Abdollahian was born in the city of Damghan, east of Tehran in 1964. He was married and had two children.

Iranian state television on Monday said there was “no sign” of life among passengers of the helicopter which was carrying Raisi, Amir-Abdollahian and other officials.

The Iranian Red Crescent confirmed their bodies had been recovered from the site of the Sunday crash in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province.

Amir-Abdollahian had earned a bachelor’s degree in international relations from the University of Tehran in 1991, later completing a master’s degree and a doctorate in the same field.

As a diplomat in the Iranian foreign service, his postings included Iraq, from 1997 to 2001, and Bahrain, from 2007 to 2010.

Under former populist president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Amir-Abdollahian served as deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs.

He had been involved in efforts to restart stalled negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme, after a 2015 deal with Western governments unravelled as the United States unilaterally withdrew from the accord in 2018. Talks however have ground to a standstill.

Throughout his career, Amir-Abdollahian was known for his strong ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the ideological arm of Iran’s military.

The diplomat was particularly close with revered IRGC general Qasem Soleimani, the commander of its foreign operations arm who was killed in a 2020 US strike in Baghdad.

Amir-Abdollahian had hailed Soleimani’s “strategic genius” for preventing Syria and Iraq “disintegration”.

In a June 2020 interview, he said Soleimani was a “true diplomat” for his negotiation skills.

Last month, with regional tensions soaring over the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip and with violence drawing in regional Iranian allies, Amir-Abdollahian defended Tehran’s first-ever direct attack on sworn enemy Israel.

The Iranian attack was in retaliation for an earlier air strike widely blamed on Israel that levelled Tehran’s Damascus consulate.

Amir-Abdollahian explained the attack to be “in the framework of legitimate defence and international law”.

He later downplayed a reported retaliatory Israeli raid on Iran’s central province of Isfahan, home to a key nuclear facility, saying it was akin to child’s play.

Gaza hospital, 20 killed in Israeli strike, Nuseirat

GAZA: A Gaza hospital said Sunday that an Israeli air strike targeting a house at a refugee camp in the centre of the Palestinian territory killed at least 20 people.

“We received 20 fatalities and several wounded after an Israeli air strike targeted a house belonging to the Hassan family in Al-Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza,” the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital said in a statement.

Witnesses said the strike occurred around 3:00 am local time. The Israeli army said it was checking the report.

Palestinian official news agency Wafa reported that the wounded included several children, and rescuers were searching for missing people trapped under the rubble.

Fierce battles and heavy Israeli bombardments have been reported in the central Nuseirat camp since the military launched a “targeted” operation focussing on the southern city of Rafah in early May.

Palestinian militants and Israeli troops have also clashed in north Gaza’s Jabalia camp for days now.

Witnesses said several other houses were targeted in air strikes during the night across Gaza, and that air strikes and artillery shelling also hit parts of Rafah during the night.

The Israeli military said two more soldiers were killed in Gaza the previous day.

The military said 282 soldiers have been killed so far in the Gaza military campaign since the start of the ground offensive on October 27.

Elon Musk arrives in Indonesia’s Bali for planned Starlink launch

Elon-Musk-Indonesia-Starlink-Launch

Tycoon Elon Musk arrived on the Indonesian island of Bali on Sunday ahead of the planned launch of SpaceX’s Starlink internet service, which the Indonesian government hopes will boost internet penetration and health services in remote parts of the sprawling archipelago.

Chief investment minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan greeted Musk’s arrival by private jet at Bali’s airport on Sunday morning, saying the two would discuss several important collaborations, including the inauguration of Starlink, according to a post on his Instagram page.

Equal internet access across Southeast Asia’s largest economy, home to more than 270 million people living in three time zones, would enable people in remote areas to enjoy the same fast internet as those in urban areas, he said.

Musk, the billionaire head of SpaceX and Tesla (TSLA.O), opens new tab , will launch Starlink with Indonesian President Joko Widodo at a community health centre in Denpasar, the capital of Bali, on Sunday afternoon, he said.

The satellite unit of Musk’s SpaceX has already secured a permit to operate in Southeast Asia’s largest economy, Communications Minister Budi Arie Setiadi told Reuters last week.

Starlink obtained a permit to operate as an internet service provider for retail consumers and had been given the go-ahead to provide networks, having received a very small aperture terminal (VSAT) permit, the minister said in an interview.

Indonesia is the third country in Southeast Asia where Starlink will operate. Malaysia issued the firm a license to provide internet services last year and a Philippine-based firm signed a deal with SpaceX in 2022.

Starlink is also used extensively in Ukraine, where it is employed by the military, hospitals, businesses and aid organisations.

This February, the country also urged SpaceX to act to prevent Russia from using its Starlink terminals for communications in areas occupied by Moscow’s troops.

Celebrities face digital backlash over Gaza silence

block out 2024, celebrities face backlash, gaza crisis

Celebrities who have remained silent on the crisis in Gaza are feeling the wrath of angry fans wielding the ‘digital guillotine’ to block them on social media and streaming platforms.

Watch ARY News live on live.arynews.tv

Taylor Swift, Drake and many more have become targets of the ‘Block Out 2024’ movement, which began on TikTok in response to the perceived disconnect between the glamorous Met Gala and the grim realities of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

For months, pro-Palestinian activists have flooded the comments sections of social media sites, urging stars to join calls for a ceasefire in Gaza’s deadliest war.

But matters came to a head after last week’s Met Gala, a glitzy fundraiser and the biggest night in fashion featuring A-list stars from screen, stage, sports and the world’s runways.

Dressed in an extravagant gown, influencer Haley Kalil posted on TikTok lip-synching “Let them eat cake” — a phrase notoriously associated with Marie Antoinette that symbolizes the callous disregard of 18th-century French aristocrats towards the poor.

Fellow TikToker ladyfromtheoutside, who started the movement, responded: “It’s time for the people to conduct what I want to call a digital guillotine, a digitine, if you will,” referring to the execution apparatus used during the French Revolution.

“Take our views away, our likes, our comments, our money,” she urged.

Her message was taken up as a rallying cry for the pro-Palestinian movement, and early signs suggest the boycott may be having an impact.

Some impact, but for how long?

Reality star Kim Kardashian — who attended the ball in New York — has lost hundreds of thousands of Instagram followers in recent days, according to analytics site Social Blade.

Global music superstar Taylor Swift, who opted to focus on her Eras Tour rather than appear at the event, has also seen a decline of more than 200,000 followers since last Thursday.

“This is about lives and justice — if she can rally all of us to vote, she has the power to speak up about injustice,” said a TikToker who described herself as a ‘Palestinian Swiftie’ and said it was time to block, unfollow and stop streaming her idol.

It’s uncertain whether the movement is directly responsible for the social media hits seen by some celebrities, or if other trends are at play.

Moreover, the losses could be short-lived, Natasha Lindstaedt, a University of Essex professor who has studied celebrity activism, told AFP.

“Sometimes people make a decision based on an emotional response to an issue and decide that if a celebrity isn’t on the same side… they don’t want to follow them anymore, but that takes a second,” she says.

This phenomenon is known in academic circles as ‘slacktivism’ — substituting low-stakes online actions like posting memes or liking posts, or choosing to unfollow a favourite star — for meaningful political engagement.

Instead of responding, celebrities might find it wiser to wait out the backlash, especially given the sensitive nature of the Gaza conflict, which has proven perilous for many stars.

Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon was dropped by her talent agency UTA after speaking at a pro-Palestine rally in November.

More recently, Jerry Seinfeld, long the model of an apolitical celebrity, has faced criticism for affiliating himself more closely with Israel.

That backlash against the Jewish comedian intensified after a report said his wife Jessica donated to a group of pro-Israel counter-protesters at UCLA, where violence broke out against pro-Palestinian demonstrators.

She later wrote on Instagram that she supported a peaceful rally days earlier and did not support or contribute to any violent actions.

One-way relationships

According to David Jackson, a professor at Bowling Green State University who has studied how the political positions taken by stars affect their approval ratings, told AFP “There’s a history of celebrity involvement in politics that goes back a hundred years or more in the US.”

But with the advent of social media, it’s become easier for people to develop “parasocial” relationships with stars — essentially one-way connections that feel reciprocal.

“You have your network of people you follow, and some of them are people you know, and some of them are celebrities, and the boundaries, I suppose, can be blurred,” Jackson said.

That false sense of closeness makes the feeling of betrayal all the more acute when celebrities take a position you disapprove of or don’t take any position at all.

Even appearing to respond to fan demands can be risky.

When rapper Lizzo promoted a fundraiser to aid a Gazan doctor and his family in leaving the besieged Palestinian territory, she was criticized by many for her perceived opportunism.

Anwarul Haq Kakar dismisses allegations in wheat import scandal

wheat scandal anwarul haq kakar allegations

KARACHI: Former caretaker prime minister (PM) and incumbent Senator, Anwarul Haq Kakar downplayed the wheat import scandal as a ‘storm in a teacup’.

“As time passes, people understand that there is neither a wheat crisis nor is this any scandal, an attempt has been made to create a storm in a teacup, there has been a big difference in production and demand targets in the country over the past twelve years,” Anwarul Haq Kakar said exclusively talking to ARY News.

Kakar questioned what kind of wheat scandal it is in which the commodity is becoming cheaper instead of becoming expensive.

The former caretaker prime minister said that in 2019, there was permission to import wheat under the import bill order, during the tenure of the previous government, we did not give permission to the private sector to import additional wheat, private importers imported wheat to fulfill market demand principles of supply and demand, he added.
