China vows to remain ‘safe and promising land’ for foreign investment

China, safe and promising land, foreign investment

BEIJING: A top Chinese official has vowed to protect US firms and pledged his country will remain a “promising land” for foreign investment, Beijing said Monday after it slapped 34 percent tariffs on US imports.

Beijing’s tariffs “firmly protect the legitimate rights and interests of enterprises, including American companies”, vice commerce minister Ling Ji told a panel of representatives of US companies on Sunday, his ministry said.

Those levies — which come into effect on April 10 — “are aimed at bringing the United States back onto the right track of the multilateral trade system”, he told the representatives, including of electric vehicle giant Tesla, GE Healthcare and Medtronic.

“The root cause of the tariff issue lies in the United States,” Ling said.

He urged the firms to “take pragmatic actions to jointly maintain the stability of global supply chains and promote mutual cooperation and win-win outcomes”.

China said on Friday it would slap 34 percent tariffs on all imports of US goods, in retaliation for levies at the same level announced by US President Donald Trump.

In response to the showdown, trading floors were overcome by a wave of selling on Monday.

Chicken price crosses Rs800 per kg in Karachi

chicken price Karachi high

Chicken meat is being sold for more than Rs800 per kilogram in Karachi, despite the government’s official price being set at Rs 650 per kilogram.

As per details, the price of chicken meat has skyrocketed in Karachi in recent past.

Shopkeepers are blaming poultry farmers for the soaring prices, as they report that they are purchasing chicken at higher rates from the farmers, making it impossible to sell at the government-mandated price.

Residents have called for action against those selling chicken meat at inflated prices, urging the authorities to address the issue to protect consumers from being exploited.

Poultry traders, on the other hand, attribute the price hike to increased demand during the Eid holidays, supply chain disruptions, and rising feed costs.

Traders label Eid ul Fitr 2025 sales as disappointing

Eid sales, Eid ul Fitr 2025

KARACHI: Karachi’s traders have expressed disappointment over the sluggish sales during the Eid ul Fitr 2025 season this year, saying that despite bustling markets, the sales failed to meet expectations.

President All Karachi Traders Union Atiq Mir said that the sales this year were 25 to 30 percent lower as compared to last year. He said that despite a 40 to 50 percent increase in goods available for sale during Eid ul Fitr 2025, only around Rs. 15 billion worth of goods were sold.

Atiq Mir said that 60 to 70 percent of the Eid ul Fitr 2025 season goods remained unsold and were left in warehouses. He recalled that 2015 was the best year for Eid sales in Karachi, with traders selling goods worth around Rs. 70 billion.

The President of the All Karachi Traders Union lamented that Karachi’s Eid sales potential is around Rs. 100 billion, but over the past decade, sales have dwindled from Rs. 70 billion to a mere Rs. 15 billion.

Atiq Mir attributed the decline in sales to low purchasing power, resulting in limited spending on essential items such as ready-made garments, shoes, artificial jewelry, and affordable decorative items.

Over 200 markets in Karachi’s commercial areas and city districts had been eagerly awaiting the traditional Eid shopping spree.

Indian Muslim community rejects Waqf Amendment Bill

Waqf Amendment Bill
The Muslim community in India has expressed deep concern and disappointment over the Waqf Amendment Bill, 2024, which was recently introduced in Parliament.
The bill seeks to amend the Waqf Act, 1995, and grant more powers to the district administration to manage Waqf properties.
Mohammad Fazlur Rahim Mujaddidi, General Secretary of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), stated that the Muslim community categorically rejects the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, deeming it discriminatory, communally driven, and a clear infringement on the constitutional rights of Muslim residents.
Yasoob Abbas, General Secretary of the All India Shia Personal Law Board (AISPLB), termed the bill unacceptable and announced plans to challenge it in the Supreme Court if it is passed.
Maulana Yasoob Abbas said that the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) ignored his opinion. He warned that the bill could cause significant damage to Waqf properties, as it grants all administrative powers to the district administration, district magistrate (DM), and commissioner.
Dr. Rehan Akhtar, assistant professor at Aligarh Muslim University and religious leader, said that since the introduction of the Waqf Amendment Bill, Muslims have feared that their community’s properties will be tampered with or seized.
Dr. Rehan Akhtar expressed hope that the fear among Muslims regarding the Waqf Amendment Bill will be alleviated and that a law should be enacted to prevent encroachment and tampering with Waqf properties.
The opposition alliance has termed the bill a move to disenfranchise minorities.
Gaurav Gogoi of the Congress said that the government’s goal is to “defame” and “disenfranchise” the nation’s minorities, while Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party, said that this bill would be the BJP’s “waterloo.”
Congressman KC Venugopal questioned whether the government would establish a distinct division to determine who is a five-year practicing Muslim. DMK’s A Raja challenged the government’s assertion that the Bill incorporated all recommendations of the JPC.
The opposition INDIA group said that the Waqf bill is an assault on the fundamental framework of the Constitution and that its goal is to “polarize” and divide the nation along religious lines.
The opposition MPs stated during the Lok Sabha’s debate on “The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and The Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill, 2024” that the government is attempting to conceal its shortcomings with this bill, and that even though the NDA allies supported it, they were not pleased with it.
The Bill’s clause stating that only a practicing Muslim who has been a member for five years may establish a Waqf property was also questioned by the INDIA bloc’s MPs.
Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi Sanghresh Nyas President Dinesh has written a letter in his blood and demanded that the country’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi should build hospitals, schools, colleges, and police headquarters for the public on Waqf Board properties.

Myanmar quake victim rescued after 5 days as aid calls grow

Myanmar quake victim, rescued after 5 days

MANDALAY, Myanmar: Rescuers on Wednesday pulled a man alive from the rubble five days after Myanmar’s devastating earthquake, as calls grew for the junta to allow more aid in and halt attacks on rebels.

The shallow 7.7-magnitude earthquake on Friday flattened buildings across Myanmar, killing more than 2,700 people and making thousands more homeless.

Several leading armed groups fighting the government have suspended hostilities during the quake recovery, but junta chief Min Aung Hlaing said military operations would continue — despite international criticism of multiple reported air strikes.

UN agencies, rights groups and foreign governments have urged all sides in Myanmar’s civil war to stop fighting and focus on helping those affected by the quake, the biggest to hit the country in decades.

Hopes of finding more survivors are fading, but there was a moment of joy on Wednesday as a man was pulled alive from the ruins of a hotel in the capital Naypyidaw.

The 26-year-old hotel worker was extracted by a joint Myanmar-Turkish team shortly after midnight, the fire service and junta said.

Dazed and dusty but conscious, the man was pulled through a hole in the rubble and put on a stretcher, video posted on Facebook by the Myanmar Fire Services Department showed.

Call for peace

Min Aung Hlaing said Tuesday that the death toll had risen to 2,719, with more than 4,500 injured and 441 still missing.

But with patchy communication and infrastructure delaying efforts to gather information and deliver aid, the full scale of the disaster has yet to become clear, and the toll is likely to rise.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported severe damage in the city of Sagaing, citing local rescuers saying one in three houses there have collapsed.

Healthcare facilities, damaged by the quake and with limited capacity, are “overwhelmed by a large number of patients”, while supplies of food, water and medicine are running low, WHO said in an update.

Sagaing has seen some of the heaviest fighting in Myanmar’s civil war, and AFP journalists have not been able to reach the area.

Relief groups say the overall quake response has been hindered by continued fighting between the junta and the complex patchwork of armed groups opposed to its rule, which began in a 2021 coup.

Julie Bishop, the UN special envoy on Myanmar, called on all sides to “focus their efforts on the protection of civilians, including aid workers, and the delivery of life-saving assistance”.

Even before Friday’s earthquake, 3.5 million people were displaced by the fighting, many of them at risk of hunger, according to the United Nations.

Late Tuesday, an alliance of three of Myanmar’s most powerful ethnic minority armed groups announced a one-month pause in hostilities to support humanitarian efforts in response to the quake.

The announcement by the Three Brotherhood Alliance followed a separate partial ceasefire called by the People’s Defence Force — civilian groups that took up arms after the coup to fight junta rule.

But there have been multiple reports of junta air strikes against rebel groups since the quake.

Rami Malek leads ‘relatable’ revenge thriller ‘The Amateur’

The Amateur, Rami Malek , revenge thriller

Oscar winner and former Bond villain Rami Malek plays an unlikely action hero in the espionage thriller “The Amateur”.

The movie is based on Robert Littell’s 1981 book and film of the same name.

The 2025 remake stars Malek as Charlie Heller, a CIA decoder with an IQ of over 170, who works in the deepest depths of Langley and lives in a picture-perfect country house with his loving wife Sarah, played by Rachel Brosnahan. Their happy life ends abruptly when Sarah is taken hostage and killed during a business trip to London.

Grief-stricken Charlie tracks down the perpetrators, but to his astonishment his superiors refuse to take action. Charlie blackmails the bosses to get mission-specific training and sets out on a global manhunt to get revenge.

“I was watching Daniel Craig. I said, ‘How do I get to do that?’ I have to do it in my own way, and I’ll have to do it in an unexpected manner,” Malek, who played the antagonist Lyutsifer Safin in “No Time to Die”, said as he premiered “The Amateur” in London on Monday.

“I like doing unexpected, unpredictable characters, playing them and creating them. And here’s a story with one at the heart and centre of it. He has a unique circumstance he’s been thrust into, and no one thinks he’s capable of what he ultimately achieves. That’s something that is extremely relatable to all of us,” Malek said.

Malek, who also produced the film, said the themes of the original movie still resonate four decades later.

“It was a Cold War film, and I think there are elements of that period that still exist today. So I think it’s a very relevant story. Any underdog story is pertinent to our time and someone who speaks truth to power the way Charlie does, it’s important to have that thrown onto the big screen every so often,” he said.

Veteran actor Laurence Fishburne plays Henderson, who is tasked with getting the scrawny tech whiz field ready. The two discover their differences but also a mutual respect over the course of Charlie’s journey to avenge his wife’s death.

“The audience can expect not to be able to figure this out. A lot of twists and turns,” Fishburne said.

Directed by James Hawes and also starring Caitriona Balfe, Holt McCallany and Jon Bernthal, “The Amateur” begins its global theatrical rollout on April 9.
