Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds seek to dismiss Justin Baldoni’s lawsuit

Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Justin Baldoni, it ends with us

Star Hollywood couple Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have announced their intention to seek the dismissal of Justin Baldoni’s defamation lawsuit.

To Read Lifestyle Stories in Urdu – Click Here

According to US media outlets, the ‘It Ends With Us’ star and her husband were asked by a US federal judge about their intention as to how the lawsuit will go forward.

The Hollywood couple’s legal team filed the notice after Judge Lewis Liman’s order to set out how the case will move forward.

“The Lively-Reynolds Parties intend to move to dismiss Plaintiffs’ complaint,” their attorney told the court.

It is worth noting here that attorneys for Blake Lively and Ryan Reynold and ‘It Ends With Us’ director Justin Baldoni are set to appear before the court on February 3.

The legal dispute between the two sides stems from their time during the production of their hit film ‘It Ends With Us’ in 2024.

Blake Lively has accused costar and the film’s director Justin Baldoni of sexually harassing her and a smear campaign to tarnish her image.

In his counterclaim, the Hollywood actor-director alleged that Lively defamed him by taking text messages out of context and mischaracterising their interactions.

He also accused Lively and Ryan Reynolds of pressurising talent agency WME to drop him as a client.

Earlier this month, the US judge said that he expected to schedule a trial for March 2026.

The court will combine Blake Lively’s case with Baldoni’s counterclaim, in which he is seeking $400 million in damages.

Baldoni has also filed a $250 million counter-lawsuit against the New York Times, for backing Lively’s sexual harassment allegations story.

Yemen’s Houthis say freed detained ship’s crew after Gaza truce

Houthis free ship crew, Galaxy Leader, Gaza truce

SANAA, Yemen: Yemen’s Houthi rebels on Wednesday freed the crew of the merchant ship Galaxy Leader after detaining them for more than a year, citing the ceasefire in Gaza between Israel and Hamas as motivation.

Weeks after the war in the Gaza Strip broke out on October 7, 2023, the Houthis began launching attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden in what they said was support for the Palestinians.

At the start of their campaign, helicopter-borne rebels stormed the vehicle carrier Galaxy Leader and detained its 25 international crew.

On Wednesday, the Houthi supreme council “announced the freeing of the crew of the Galaxy Leader, who were arrested on November 19, 2023, during the campaign in solidarity with Gaza”, the rebels’ Saba news agency said.

It added that the release came “in support of the ceasefire” in the Palestinian territory, which began on Sunday.

Saba said the crew were freed with the help of the Gulf sultanate of Oman.

At a press conference held on the tarmac surrounded by the 25 crew members, a Hamas official hailed the “coordination” between his group and the Houthis that led to the crew’s release, according to footage aired by the rebel-affiliated Al-Masirah TV channel.

Oman’s foreign ministry later confirmed that the crew — comprising the Bulgarian captain and second-in-command, 17 Filipinos, and a handful of Ukrainian, Romanian and Mexican sailors — had flown from Sanaa to Muscat aboard an Omani air force plane.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos confirmed the release of the Filipinos who were detained, adding that they are now under the care of Manila’s Embassy in Oman.

“It is with utmost joy that, after more than a year of captivity in Yemen, I announce the safe release of all seventeen Filipino seafarers, together with the rest of the crewmembers of M/V Galaxy Leader,” Marcos said in a statement.

Bulgaria’s foreign ministry said Wednesday that “Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov dispatched the government plane” to bring their two citizens back home.

‘Heartwarming news’

UN special envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg called the release of the crew “heartwarming news”. He also urged the Houthis to end “all maritime attacks”.

International Maritime Organization chief Arsenio Dominguez said in a statement that it was “a moment of profound relief for all of us — not only for the crew and their families, but also to the wider maritime community”.

Dominguez, whose UN agency deals with shipping security, called the release a testament to “diplomacy and dialogue, recognising innocent seafarers must not become collateral victims in wider geopolitical tensions”.

Among the ships targeted by the Houthis were vessels the rebels believed were linked to Israel, the United States and the United Kingdom.

The Bahamas-flagged, British-owned Galaxy Leader is operated by a Japanese firm but has links to Israeli businessman Abraham “Rami” Ungar.

The rebels later opened the ship as an attraction for Yemeni tourists who were invited to visit the captured vessel, which was by then flying Yemeni and Palestinian flags, off the rebel-held province of Hodeida.

Part of Iran’s “axis of resistance”, the Houthis have also repeatedly launched missiles and drones at Israel since the Gaza war began with Hamas’s 2023 attack.

On Tuesday, they said that during the Gaza ceasefire they would limit their attacks to vessels linked to Israel.

‘Borrowing isn’t problematic, but the proper utilization is crucial’

Muhammad Aurangzeb, Pakistan, borrowing, isn't bad

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb on Wednesday said achieving sustainable development is Pakistan’s top priority.

The finance minister, in his address on the increasing global debt burden on developing economies, stated that Pakistan’s biggest issue has been the twin deficits in the current and fiscal accounts.

He explained that the primary reason for the fiscal deficit is the unsustainable tax-to-GDP ratio, which stands at 9 to 10 per cent. Efforts are currently underway to increase this ratio to 13 per cent, the Finance Minister added.

The government is focused on reducing its expenditures and minimizing the volume of debt repayments, the Minister further emphasized. He also shared that Pakistan’s debt-to-GDP ratio has decreased from 78 per cent to 67 per cent.

While acknowledging that borrowing itself is not problematic, the Finance Minister clarified that the crucial aspect lies in the proper utilization of loans. He suggested that loans should be used to enhance productive capacity and promote exports.

Muhammad Aurangzeb concluded by noting that Pakistan’s economic growth has experienced fluctuations over the years, indicating the challenges the country has faced in maintaining stable economic progress.

Read more: Tax-to-GDP ratio to reach 13pc in three years, vows Aurangzeb

Earlier on December 26, last year, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb vowed to take Tax-to-GDP ratio to 13 per cent in three years in Pakistan.

He was addressing a news conference alongside Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar and Minister of State for Finance Ali Pervez Malik in Islamabad.

Muhammad Aurangzeb said taxation reforms have a key role in fiscal stability. He said the country has been languishing between 9-10 per cent in terms of tax to GDP ratio but we have set a target of 13.5 per cent for next three years to improve this standing.

FBR chairman admits to corruption within the department

FBR chairman, Rashid Langrial, corruption

ISLAMABAD: Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Chairman Rashid Langrial admitted to corruption within the department on Tuesday, ARY News reported.

“Corrupt practices are still going in FBR,” Rashid Langiral said while briefing the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Finance.

Langrial told the NA body that the changes in tax laws are intended to increase the tax base, targeting higher-income individuals and those engaged in significant business transactions.

Under the new laws, FBR officers are being granted additional powers to address issues of black money and tax evasion, he added.

The FBR chairman noted that non-filers will be restricted from engaging in economic transactions, such as purchasing cars or property and making investments. He also highlighted that non-filers will be unable to participate in the formal economy, reinforcing the government’s efforts to formalize business activities and curb the black economy.

The cabinet has also been given the authority to recruit auditors to strengthen tax collection processes. Langrial mentioned that a detailed review of the bill will take place in the cabinet before any final decision is made.

Finance Minister of State, Ali Pervez Malik, stressed that addressing the imbalance in the tourism economy and halting vehicle purchases with black money are essential steps for the country’s economic sustainability.

Read more: FBR to buy over 1000 new cars for officers

Despite these measures, Langrial acknowledged that tax revenues have not grown at a proportionate rate to inflation and economic growth, pointing out that tax revenue in 2024 was only at the same level as in 2008.

He also mentioned the increase in income and sales taxes, including hikes that have impacted salaried individuals.

The NA body chiarman expressed concerns that these reforms may exacerbate existing problems rather than resolving them, noting that the public is likely to face difficulties under the current system. He also highlighted the pressure on the economy due to foreign exchange shortages.

Hina Rabbani Khar, a member of the Committee, criticized the ongoing corruption within the FBR and emphasized that no one should have the authority to block citizens’ bank accounts. She called for a more effective and transparent tax system.

According to the details, Khandre, who previously called for strict action against the ‘Toxic’ makers, for this environmental breach, said on Monday that the notice had been issued to officials and action would be taken after reviewing their replies.

Khandre stated that the officials had falsely claimed in a Supreme Court filing of 2020 that the land in Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT) possession had lost its forest status and shared that the makers were given a lease by Canara Bank, which had purchased the land from HMT, who sold 160 acres of land to private entities for INR313 crore (original value of land is INR14,300 crores) when the organization was shut down due to losses.

“In any case, this is a much-needed breathing space for Bengaluru city. One cannot put a price on it,” added Khandre. “This is the property of seven crore Kannadigas. All Kannadigas should support the government in protecting it.”

Meanwhile, filmmaker Geethu Mohandas’ action thriller ‘Toxic’, co-starring Yash with Kiara Advani, Huma Qureshi and Nayanthara, is scheduled for theatrical release in April 2025.

Trump the saviour? People of Ukraine question president’s power to end war

Trump and people of Ukraine's hopes of ending war- 2025

“Why is everyone putting their hopes in Trump?”. Liudmyla Parybus isn’t holding her breath for the incoming US president to end the war in Ukraine.

“I don’t put any hope in him,” the 20-year-old student told Reuters in Kyiv city centre. “In the end it depends on us.”

Her sense of scepticism is shared by many Ukrainians who have scant faith in Donald Trump’s promises to swiftly strike a peace deal after he enters the White House on Monday.
“Our fate is in our own hands,” said Marharyta Deputat, a 29-year-old sales manager. “We can’t rely on anyone else.”

Hanna Horbachova, 55, isn’t pinning her family’s future on a negotiated end to the conflict, which has ground on for almost three years since Russia’s full-scale invasion.

The owner of a thriving bakery business was forced to flee her home in the Donetsk region a decade ago after fighting erupted between the Ukrainian government and Russian-backed militias in eastern Ukraine and two internationally brokered peace deals subsequently collapsed.

She doesn’t rule out abandoning her new home of Dnipro if Vladimir Putin’s large Russian army continues to creep towards the southeastern city.

“He will not stop in the Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia or Dniptopetrovsk region,” she told Reuters amid the crackling of fried dough in her bakery. “He will go further.”

While sceptical about the chances of a deal, she nonetheless believes the new American president has an outside chance to become a global peace icon if he delivers on his pledges.

“Trump has the opportunity to go down in history as a saviour of a huge nation,” Horbachova said.

Indeed, not everyone dismisses the prospect of Trump helping speed a ceasefire; following his election, more than a third of Ukrainians believe the war will end by the close of 2025, according to a poll of around 1,100 people by research company Gradus Research in December, up from about a quarter six months earlier.

That poll found that 31% of respondents expected the war to go on “for years” and another 31% said it was difficult to say.

Oleksandr Merezhko, head of the Ukrainian parliament’s foreign affairs committee, also said Trump could cement his legacy by bringing peace and security to Ukraine.

“Ukraine needs to become a success story for Trump,” Merezhko told Reuters. “He can enter history as a winner.”

The negotiating positions of the two warring sides remain far apart, though. Advisers to Trump now concede that the Ukraine war will take months or even longer to resolve, a sharp reality check on his biggest foreign policy promise to strike a peace deal on his first day in office.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has pushed hard for an invitation to NATO as the best way of deterring future Russian aggression; he and other officials fear any agreement falling short of an iron-clad alliance from Washington would allow the Kremlin to bide its time and eventually strike back.

“They will build up their military capabilities to come back,” Oleksii Reznikov, a former defence minister and peace negotiator with Russia, told Reuters. “They will want to continue what they started in 2014 and continued in 2022.”

While Putin has said he is open to discussing a ceasefire deal with Trump, he rules out making any major territorial concessions and insists Kyiv abandon ambitions to join NATO, five sources told Reuters in November.

‘A NEW MILITARY ADVENTURE’

The ultimate failure of the two ceasefire deals that spurred Horbachova’s flight from her original home a decade ago – which Ukraine blames partly on the absence of robust Western military support – point to the perils and pitfalls of any peace pact.

Those agreements, known as the Minsk accords after the Belarusian capital where they were signed in 2014-15, quickly collapsed amid accusations from both sides of breaches.

While large-scale fighting subsided after 2015, creating the contours of a frozen conflict, clashes flared up sporadically before Russia’s invasion three years ago.

Horbachova’s family left Horlivka 10 years ago due to the fighting and re-settled in Toretsk where they started their food business. After full-scale war broke out in 2022 they moved again, leaving Toretsk shortly before Russian shelling damaged their bakery. The town is now on the verge of capture by Russian forces.

Former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, who signed the Minsk accords while in power and is now a political opponent of Zelenskiy’s, agreed with the current leader’s view that NATO membership for Ukraine was pivotal.

“We’ve been there before and thus know that nothing would work as efficiently and surely this time around and in the future as Ukraine being invited and joining NATO,” he told Reuters. “This alone would avert a new military adventure by Russia and make peace, not force, reign.”

On the battlefield, both sides are pushing to improve their positions ahead of any peace talks, with Ukraine’s outmanned military struggling to hold back Russian advances in the east while fighting to maintain a toehold in Russia’s Kursk region.

Even if a deal to end hostilities is agreed, making it stick could be a major challenge, according to Samir Puri, research director at the Centre for Global Governance and Security at London think-tank Chatham House. He said it remained an open question who would monitor and enforce a ceasefire.

Roman Kostenko, a lawmaker who commanded special forces units on the front lines until his election to parliament in 2019, said that in his experience little could be done if one side opened fire on the battlefield and the other responded.

“I am someone who has lived through dozens of ceasefires, perhaps 20,” he added. “Every one of these ceasefires with Russia didn’t last more than five minutes.”

China welcomes Gaza ceasefire deal

China, Gaza ceasefire deal

BEIJING: China said Thursday that it welcomed a ceasefire agreement in Gaza between Israel and the Hamas militant group, vowing “unremitting efforts to promote peace and stability in the Middle East”.

“We also sincerely hope that relevant parties will take the ceasefire in Gaza as an opportunity to promote the easing of regional tensions,” foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told a regular briefing.

On Wednesday, Qatar and the United States announced a ceasefire and hostage-release deal between Israel and Hamas.

The truce would take effect on Sunday and involve the exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners, after which the terms of a broader peace deal would be finalised.

Beijing on Thursday said it hoped the “agreement can be effectively implemented to achieve a comprehensive and permanent ceasefire in Gaza”.

China would “continue to provide humanitarian assistance to Gaza and make positive efforts to resume post-war reconstruction”, Guo said.

“China will work with the international community to make unremitting efforts to promote peace and stability in the Middle East,” he added.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog, who holds a largely ceremonial role, said the deal was the “right move” to bring back hostages seized during the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack that sparked the war.

Israel’s ensuing war on Gaza destroyed much of the territory, killing 46,707 people, most of them civilians, according to figures from the health ministry of the region.

SC questions ‘security lapse’ in May 9 Incidents during military courts hearing

Military courts, security lapse, SC, May 9 riots

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday questioned the ‘security lapse’ during the May 9 incidents while hearing intra-court appeals challenging the trial of civilians in military courts.

The bench, headed by Justice Aminuddin Khan, heard intra-court appeals challenging the decisions of military courts. The bench also comprised Justices Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi, Naeem Akhtar Afghan, Musarrat Hilali, and Shahid Bilal Hassan.

Justice Amin-ud-Din’s constitutional bench asked whether any resistance was offered when people entered the Lahore Corps Commander House on May 9.

Advocate Khawaja Haris, representing the Ministry of Defence, argued that the trial of civilians under military law is not unprecedented, citing legal provisions dating back to 1967. He stated that even during peacetime, civilians interfering in military matters could be tried in military courts.

Justice Hassan Azhar pointed out that cases like F.B. Ali occurred during martial law, emphasizing a distinction from the current scenario.

Justice Hassan Azhar questioned whether the mastermind behind the May 9 incidents had been identified and whether any trial against them was ongoing. Khawaja Haris confirmed that such cases would also fall under military jurisdiction.

The bench inquired about the lack of resistance to the events at military installations.

Khawaja Haris responded that while protesters were accused of damaging property, no military officer had been charged, and efforts were made to avoid any loss of life through measured restraint.

The Supreme Court adjourned the hearing on the intra-court appeals against the trial of civilians in military courts until tomorrow.
