In a statement, Mirza Ikhtiar Baig revealed that the amendment includes a proposal to freeze the bank accounts of non-filers and prevent them from transferring immovable property.

He also mentioned that non-filers could have their business premises confiscated under the new provisions.

Baig said that the PPP would oppose such laws, calling them excessively harsh.

He suggested that the bill be discussed in the Finance and Revenue Committees of the National Assembly.

Highlighting the government’s responsibility, Baig pointed out that the category of “non-filers” was created by the government itself, and questioned whether people would soon need permission just to breathe.

He revealed that 22 IT companies had already left Pakistan due to slow internet speeds, leading to significant losses in the IT sector. Baig urged the government to take action to strengthen Pakistan’s IT industry.

Last week, after Senate body approved the tax amendment bill, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) announced that it had issued notices to some 169,000 influential individuals to bring them into the tax net.

Australia rip out seven late wickets to beat India, lead series 2-1

Australia beat India, seven late wickets, fourth Test

MELBOURNE: Australia ripped out seven Indian wickets in the final session of the fourth Test in Melbourne on Monday to win by 184 runs and go 2-1 up in the five-match series.

India collapsed to 155 all out with just 12.5 overs left in the match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and will need to win the final Test starting in Sydney on Friday to level the series and retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Australia captain Pat Cummins, who took 3-28, removed top-scorer Yashasvi Jaiswal for 84 as India’s last seven wickets fell for 34 runs from 20.3 overs.

Set an unlikely 340 runs to win, India looked well placed to save it when Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant batted through the entire second session to be 112-3 at tea.

However, the departure of Pant for 30, caught in the deep from a wild shot off part-time spinner Travis Head, sparked their collapse.

Ravindra Jadeja and first-innings centurion Nitish Kumar Reddy came and went quickly before Cummins ended Jaiswal’s gritty 208-ball knock in controversial fashion.

The 23-year-old was given not out to a caught-behind appeal from an attempted hook.

But the decision was overturned by the TV umpire on visual evidence that the ball had changed direction, even though no noise was picked up by technology.

Akash Deep was caught at short leg off Scott Boland (3-39) before Jasprit Bumrah scored his second duck of the match and Mohammed Siraj was the last man out, trapped lbw by Nathan Lyon, who finished with 2-37.

A tenacious Washington Sundar was left not out five after facing 45 balls.

India’s hopes were rocked in the first session when veteran batsmen Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli all departed for single figure scores.

Cummins completed an inspirational Test, taking 3-38 and six wickets in all adding to scoring 90 runs, the best batting match tally of his career.

Aurangzeb calls for “Charter of Economy”

Muhammad Aurangzeb, charter of economy, Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb on Sunday called for a “Charter of Economy” to steer the country out of economic crises.

Speaking to farmers and stakeholders in Kamalia (Toba Tek Singh), Aurangzeb urged all the stakeholders to get united for “Charter of Economy” and for other problems being faced by Pakistan.

The minister emphasized that agriculture and IT were crucial to Pakistan’s economic future, saying, “We are very clear, agriculture and IT have to lead this country as we move forward.”

He said that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) program is focused on stabilization and made it clear that if agriculture and IT face difficulties it was because of us, so we should find solution and promote these sectors for sustainable economic development.

Aurangzeb expressed concern that despite numerous research institutions working to develop the agriculture sector, they have could not produce desired results in promoting crop yields. He noted that a significant portion of finances (80%) go towards salaries, leaving only 20% for research work, which he said should have been otherwise.

The minister stated that the government has successfully achieved macroeconomic stability, a crucial foundation for GDP growth. Building on this achievement, Pakistan’s economy is poised to transition towards sustainable growth from 2025 onwards.

Notably, this claim of economic stability isn’t just a government assertion, but has also been corroborated by independent sources, lending credibility to the country’s economic progress, he added.

Highlighted achievements Muhammad Aurangzeb said, government was successful in ensuring macroeconomic stability, reducing inflation to a single digit, and decreasing interest rates. He also mentioned the increase in consumption of cement and fertilizer, as well as a 58% surge in auto-sales, as indicators of the government’s prudent policies.

Aurangzeb reiterated the government’s commitment to bringing reforms in taxation, energy, and State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) sectors. He emphasized the need to improve Pakistan’s tax-to-GDP ratio, which currently stands at 9-10%, and aims to increase it to 13.5%. The minister also announced plans to simplify the taxation process, ensure digitization, and reduce human intervention.

On energy, Muhammad Aurangzeb expressed hope that energy tariffs would come down, and efforts are underway to check leakages in DISCOS by bringing reforms with private sector engagement. He reiterated that the government’s role is to ensure regulations, while the private sector should lead the economy.

The minister expressed intention to shut down Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (Passco) and create an alternative mechanism for maintaining strategic reserves, may be in private sector. He also questioned the effectiveness the Higher Education Commission

The minister cited Sialkot as a role model for self-sufficiency and Kamalia Khaddar as a world brand, urging stakeholders to learn from these examples to drive the economy forward.

Muhammad Aurangzeb assured farmers and stakeholders of his full support in addressing their grievances, emphasizing the government’s commitment to serving the people of Pakistan.

He said, the government was determined to go to stakeholders at their doorsteps to benefit from their suggestions instead of merely sitting in Islamabad. “If we say we are here to serve the people of Pakistan, then we have to go wherever people are,” he said adding the process of whole budget would be done by coming to stakeholders.

Viral video: Virat Kohli, Konstas involved in mid-pitch alteration in MCG Test

Virat-Kohli,-Sam Konstas-MCG-Test,-Aus-vs-Ind-alteration

A tense altercation occurred between India’s Virat Kohli and Australia’s 19-year-old debutant Sam Konstas during the first session of the ongoing Boxing Day Test at the MCG.

The incident took place after the 10th over of the morning when both players bumped shoulders while moving across the pitch between overs.

The two immediately exchanged words, with the confrontation escalating before being interrupted by Konstas’ opening partner Usman Khawaja and umpire Michael Gough, who quickly stepped in to diffuse the tension.

Replays of the incident revealed that after the final ball of the 10th over, Konstas was walking towards the other end of the pitch, while Kohli, holding the ball, made a clear movement towards Sam Konstas and bumped into him.

Konstas later reflected on the incident in the second session, telling Channel 7: “I didn’t quite realise, I was doing my gloves, then a little shoulder charge, but it happens in cricket.”

Despite the on-field drama, debutant Sam Konstas made an impressive debut, scoring a brilliant half-century off just 52 balls, including aggressive shots against India’s top bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.

He was dismissed for 60 off 65 balls, having played a crucial role in Australia’s strong start to the innings.

Reaction

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, watching the replay, was firm in his assessment, stating, “Virat’s walked one whole pitch over to his right and instigated that confrontation. No doubt in my mind whatsoever.”

Former umpire Simon Taufel also weighed in, suggesting that Kohli’s actions could qualify as “inappropriate physical contact” under the ICC’s Code of Conduct. He explained, “Virat Kohli actually changed his line to get into the personal space of Sam Konstas. This is a clause within the ICC Code of Conduct, and the umpires and the referee will be looking at it seriously after play today.”

Baby John: Box office collection from morning shows on opening day

Baby John, Varun Dhawan

The movie ‘Baby John’, actor Varun Dhawan’s major attempt to become an action hero superstar, is struggling at the box office as it could collect INR 2 crores from morning shows throughout India.

‘Baby John’ received terrible reviews when it debuted on Christmas Day and is only generating middling financial interest among moviegoers, local media reported.

To Read Lifestyle Stories in Urdu- Click Here

Directed by Kalees, the film is seen as another major collaboration between Hindi and South Indian cinema after Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan was featured in Atlee’s “Jawan.”

In contrast, ‘Pushpa 2’ on its 21st day of release is still in the running at the box office, and with over INR 1000 crore already collected, Allu Arjun’s film outperformed ‘Baby John’ in morning shows throughout India.

According to local media, ‘Baby John’ has collected only INR 2 crore across the country from morning shows, with an occupancy of just under 14 percent. ‘Baby John’ may collect INR 15 crore despite the fact that more people are expected to attend the afternoon and evening shows

Read More: Varun Dhawan opens up on channeling Rajinikanth in ‘Baby John’

Given that Wednesday is a holiday due to Christmas, Pushpa 2 might earn a little more than the Rs 14 crore it did on day 20 of its release.

The local media reported that ‘Baby John’ only sold about INR 5 crore worth of tickets ahead of time for the first day, which is not a particularly outstanding amount.

‘Baby John’ Producer Atlee has personally assisted in promoting the film, which has been positioned as a pan-India entertainer. With the success of Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan last year, Atlee’s brand has grown significantly.

Baby John is a remake of his film Theri, which starred Vijay. His old colleague Kalees is the film’s director, and Keerthy Suresh and Wamiqa Gabbi play minor parts.

The horror comedy Bhediya, Varun Dhwan’s last film, also did poorly at the box office. On the first day of release, the film earned INR 7 crore. His earlier role was in the romance drama JugJugg Jeeyo, which earned Rs 9 crore on its first day of release.

Ironically, one of Varun Dhawan’s worst failures is also his biggest opener as Kalank grossed INR 21 crore on the first day but collapsed later. Dishoom, his final action movie, earned Rs 11 crore on its first day in 2016.

Richard Grenell, who has been picked by United States (US) President-elect Donald Trump as presidential envoy for special missions, said he would like to see Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan out of jail.

Speaking to a US news outlet, Richard Grenell said, “There are a lot of the same allegations just like President Trump, where the ruling party put him in prison and created some sort of corruption allegations and false allegations.”

“I would like to see Imran Khan be released from jail,” Richard Grenell told NEWSMAX.

The special envoy of President-elect Donald Trump was of the view that the people of Pakistan should decide if Imran Khan wants to run for office.

“[The US] had a much better relationship with Pakistan during the Trump administration when Imran Khan was the leader because [he] was an outsider. He [Imran Khan] was a former cricket player, he wasn’t a politician and he spoke in very common sense language, and he and Donald Trump had a very good relationship.”

Earlier in November, the US Congress members once again wrote a letter to President Joe Biden, expressing grave concern over the detention of Imran Khan and the human rights situation in Pakistan.

At least 54 members of the US House of Representatives wrote outgoing US president Joe Biden, asking him to advocate for the immediate release of incarcerated PTI founder.

While terming Imran Khan’s arrest as ‘unlawful’ the US Congress members called on the Biden administration to advocate for release of other political prisoners.

“A focal point of our concern is the unlawful detention of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, widely perceived to be Pakistan’s most popular political figure. We urgently call on the U.S. government to advocate for the immediate release of former Prime Minister Khan and all political prisoners, and to ensure their safety in line with the findings of the UN Working Group report,” the letter read.

The US Congress members also demanded immediate action on the resolution of the House of Representatives on the human rights situation in Pakistan.

It is crucial to recognize that gold prices are influenced by global fluctuations, including those occurring within Saudi Arabia, and the figures provided were last updated at 10:29 am on December 21, 2024.

This modification reflects the current trends in the global gold market, which are influenced by various factors, including economic conditions, geopolitical events, and changes in investor sentiment.

Gold, recognized as a highly esteemed precious metal, has held significant value for centuries and is integral to the global economy. Its worth is derived from its rarity, resilience, and universal attraction. Often viewed as a safe-haven asset, gold is utilized to safeguard wealth during periods of economic uncertainty.

Central banks and investors hold gold reserves to enhance the diversity of their investment portfolios and to shield against inflation and fluctuations in currency value.

The intrinsic appeal and finite supply of gold make it a highly desired material for jewelry and luxury goods. The demand for gold jewelry fosters economic activity across the mining, manufacturing, and retail industries.

In the international market, gold prices gained on Thursday, rebounding from a one-month low, as the market digested the US Federal Reserve’s hint of a gradual policy easing next year, with investors awaiting more data to gauge the economy’s health.

Bangladesh completes sweep of three T20Is over West Indies

Bangladesh,-West-Indies,-clearn-sweep,-T20Is

Jaker Ali’s blistering unbeaten 72 highlighted a dominant Bangladesh effort as the visitors thrashed the West Indies by 80 runs in the third and final T20 International to sweep the series 3-0 at the Arnos Vale Stadium in St Vincent on Thursday.

Benefiting from a huge reprieve when he thought he had been run out on 18, the attacking right-hander took heavy toll of an uninspired Caribbean team, belting six sixes and three fours off just 41 balls to pace his side to a challenging 189 for seven after skipper Litton Das opted to bat first.

Beaten in the first two low-scoring matches at the same venue, the West Indies were never in the hunt for a consolation victory after losing Brandon King to the second delivery of their reply and were eventually bundled out for 109 off 16.4 overs.

All-rounder Romario Shepherd top-scored with 33.

Wrist-spinner Rishad Hossain led the rout with three for 21 while there were two wickets each for fellow spinner Mahedi Hasan, the “Man of the Series,” and seamer Taskin Ahmed, who had the distinction of starting the slide when the trapped King leg-before and then sealed victory by bowling local hero Obed McCoy.

Debutant opener Parvez Hossain Emon, playing in the absence of the injured Soumya Sarkar, set the tone for the Bangladesh innings with 39 off 21 balls before “Man of the Match” Jaker took over the show with a display typical of his uninhibited batting style.

However, it could all have been very different had the on-field run out decision against him stood following a terrible mix-up with Shamim Hossain. A fuming Jaker, believing that a second run was always on, could not disguise his rage when Shamim opted to return to the striker’s end and bowler Roston Chase effected the dismissal.

Yet even as he continued to vent his frustration in the dressing room, television replays showed he had made his ground at the striker’s end just before his partner returned to safety, meaning that Shamim was the man eventually on his way back to the pavilion.

All was forgiven at the end of the innings, though, as Shamim was first to embrace his teammate after his power-hitting drained any enthusiasm left in a deflated West Indies side.

Scores

Bangladesh 189-7 off 20 overs (Jaker Ali 72 n.o., Parvez Hossain Emon 39, Mehidy Hasan Miraz 29; Romario Shepherd 2-30, Roston Chase 1-15, Gudakesh Motie 1-30) vs West Indies 109 all out off 16.4 overs (Romario Shepherd 33, Johnson Charles 23, Nicholas Pooran 15; Rishad Hossain 3-21, Mahedi Hasan 2-13, Taskin Ahmed 2-30)

Result: Bangladesh won by 80 runs

Mukesh Khanna reacts after Sonakshi, Shatrughan Sinha’s criticism

Mukesh Khanna reacts after Sonakshi, Shatrughan Sinha's criticism

Veteran actor Mukesh Khanna broke his silence after Bollywood starlet Sonakshi Sinha and her father Shatrughan slammed the former for his ‘distasteful statements’ questioning her upbringing.

To Read Lifestyle Stories in Urdu – Click Here

In a new interview with an Indian media outlet, Mukesh Khanna asserted that he had no ‘malicious intention’ behind his comment, about Shatrughan Sinha’s upbringing of his daughter Sonakshi, who failed to answer a question about Ramayana, during her outing on ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’, back in 2019.

Mukesh maintained that he shares a very ‘cordial relationship’ with Shatrughan, who is a senior to him.

“I am surprised she took so much time to react,” he said. “I knew I was antagonising her by taking her name from that incident in the famous Kaun Banega Crorepati show. But I had no malicious intention to malign her or her father who is my senior and I have a very cordial relationship with him.”

“My intention was to react to today’s generation, which is called ‘Genz’ by elders, which has become slaves to today’s Google world and mobile phones. Their knowledge is limited to Wikipedia and social interactions on YouTube. And here I had a Hi-Fi case in front of me, of her, which I could use to teach others,” explained the ‘Shaktimaan’ star.

For the unversed, this feud started earlier this week, when Mukesh, during his interview with Siddharth Kannan, shared a reference to Sonakshi’s ‘KBC’ appearance, saying, “It’s not Sonakshi’s fault; it’s her father’s fault. Why did you not tell your kids? Why did you let them be so modern?”

Responding to the remark, the ‘Dabangg’ star stated, “Dear Sir, Mukesh Khanna ji …I recently read a statement you made saying that it’s my father’s fault I did not answer a question about the Ramayana correctly on a show I attended many, many years back.”

“Not that I need your forgiveness, but yes, I definitely need you to forget and stop bringing up the same incident time and again to be back in the news at the expense of me and my family,” she added.

Addressing the matter, Shatrughan Sinha said in the latest interview, “I believe someone has a problem with Sonakshi not answering a question on the Ramayana. Not answering a question on the Ramayana doesn’t disqualify Sonakshi from being a good Hindu. She doesn’t need a certificate of approval from anyone.”
