Mumbai Police arrests man for issuing death threat to Salman Khan

salman khan death threat

A day after Bollywood superstar Salman Khan received a fresh death threat and ransom demand from an unknown caller, Mumbai police arrested the suspected person for allegedly sending the message.

For the unversed, Salman Khan received the latest death threat in a WhatsApp message sent to Mumbai Police’s Traffic Helpline number, where the sender demanded that the Bollywood star and MLA Zeeshan Siddique must pay INR2 crores or else they would face dire consequences.

Reportedly, the sender threatened that the two would meet the same fate as Siddique’s father, former lawmaker and NCP politician Baba Siddique, who was killed by the shooters of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang earlier this month, for his ties with the Bollywood star.

The matter was reported to the Worli Police and the officials started a probe into the message.

As per the latest development, Mumbai police have arrested 56-year-old Azam Mohammed Mustafa, a resident of Blue Fame Apartment in Bandra, for sending a threatening message to Traffic Police’s helpline.

According to the details, the officials recovered the mobile phone and the SIM card from the arrested suspect, which was used in the crime.

Reportedly, the police collected the call details record of the mobile number during the probe and based on technical inputs, nabbed the suspect from Bandra.

It is worth noting here that the officials also took into arrest a Jamshedpur man earlier, for allegedly threatening Khan in the name of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and demanding INR5 crore ransom.

Notably, Bishnoi had openly admitted to plans of eliminating Khan for killing a black buck [which is considered sacred by the Bishnoi community] in 1998.

Super Typhoon Kong-rey makes landfall in Taiwan

Super Typhoon Kong-rey, Taiwan landfall

KEELUNG, Taiwan: Super Typhoon Kong-rey made landfall in Taiwan on Thursday as one of the most powerful storms to hit the island in years, whipping up 10-metre waves and forcing thousands of people to flee their homes.

Packing maximum wind speeds of 184 kilometres per hour (114 miles per hour), Kong-rey hit the east coast at Chenggong town in Taitung County at 1:40 pm (0540 GMT), the Central Weather Administration said.

It was the same strength as Typhoon Gaemi, which was the most powerful storm to hit Taiwan in eight years when it made landfall in July, but Kong-rey’s radius of 320 kilometres made it the biggest in nearly three decades.

“Its impact on all of Taiwan will be quite severe,” Chu Mei-lin from the state weather forecaster, Central Weather Administration, warned.

Work and schools across Taiwan were suspended on Thursday as people hunkered down ahead of the storm.

The streets of Taipei were largely deserted as bursts of heavy rain and fierce wind lashed the capital.

“This typhoon feels very strong,” 52-year-old office worker Kevin Lin told AFP as he enjoyed a day off at home.

“I’m used to the many typhoons in Taiwan and I don’t feel scared.”

Troops on standby

At least 27 people have been injured in the wild weather, with trees knocked down and four mudslides recorded, the National Fire Agency said Thursday, without providing details.

Authorities were still trying to contact two Czech tourists who were believed to be hiking in Taroko Gorge in Hualien after they could not be reached on their satellite and mobile phones.

More than 400 domestic and international flights were cancelled while all ferry services were suspended. Around 18,000 homes lost power, but most have been reconnected, disaster officials said.

Taiwanese tech giant TSMC said it had “activated routine typhoon alert preparation procedures” at its chip-making facilities and did not expect a “significant impact” on operations.

Kong-rey was travelling at a “relatively fast” 21 kilometres per hour as it swept across the sea towards Hualien and Taitung counties, Chu from the state weather forecaster said.

The storm was expected to weaken after hitting land and then move across the mountains that run down the centre of the island before exiting over the Taiwan Strait in the evening, Chu said.

But she warned that the storm would “severely” affect the island all day and into the early hours of Friday.

More than a metre of rain could fall in the hardest-hit areas along the east coast by Friday as the seasonal monsoon also drenched the island of 23 million people earlier in the week, prompting warnings of landslides.

Authorities have evacuated 8,600 people from their homes in vulnerable counties and cities, including Yilan, Hualien and Taitung, according to the National Fire Agency.

Forecasters have warned of “destructive” winds from Kong-rey, and nearly 35,000 troops were on standby to help with relief efforts.

Scientists have warned climate change is increasing the intensity of storms, leading to heavier rains and flash floods and stronger gusts.

Kong-rey was the third typhoon to hit Taiwan since July.

Gaemi killed at least 10 people, injured hundreds and triggered widespread flooding in the southern seaport of Kaohsiung.

That was followed in early October by Krathon, which killed at least four people and injured hundreds, triggering mudslides, flooding and record-strong gusts.

neelam kothari, chunky panday

Former Bollywood diva Neelam Kothari revealed she once wanted to ‘kill’ her frequent co-star and close friend Chunky Panday.

In a new interview with an Indian radio channel, ‘Fabulous Lives vs Bollywood Wives’ star Neelam Kothari recalled her first experience of shooting ‘Aag Hi Aag’ (1987) with actor Chunky Panday and shared that she wanted to kill him at that time before the two went on to become good friends and shared the screen in multiple films.

“Chunky is a very good friend today. And he was a good friend back then too but there were days when I just wanted to kill him,” she said.

“He used to irritate me on set because he was a newcomer. He took his own sweet time. ‘The shot is ready, cameras are set, but where’s Chunky Panday?’ Chunky Panday’s in the bathroom. This didn’t happen just once, but many times, and I just wanted to kill him,” Kothari reasoned.

“There was a scene in Aag Hi Aag where I was getting married to someone else, and Chunky was supposed to come on a bike, pick me up from the mandap, and ride away. I must have asked him 10 times if he knew how to ride a bike, and he kept saying, ‘Of course’. He didn’t know – he was joking. So he picked me up on the bike and pushed the accelerator so hard that it did a wheelie, and I was in bridal attire. I fell off, and the bike landed on top of me,” she shared. “I burned my leg and everything. I wanted to kill him. I still have that scar on my leg, and I still remind Chunky that I have it for life because of him.”

On the work front, Neelam Kothari is most recently seen in the new season 3 of Netflix’s ‘Fabulous Lives vs Bollywood Wives’, which also includes Chunky Panday’s wife Bhavna, Maheep Kapoor and Seema Sajdeh in the main cast. The Mumbai celebrity wives are also joined by three influential businesswomen from Delhi, Riddhima Kapoor Sahni, Kalyani Saha and Shalini Passi, for the season.

Pakistan Stock Exchange, PSX, KSE-100, sco

KARACHI: The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) achieved a remarkable feat on Friday, as the KSE-100 index broke through the 90,000-point barrier in intra-day trading.

The index was trading at 90,087.41 points at 11:58 am, representing a 1.25% increase from the previous day’s close of 88,945.98.

Mohammed Sohail, chief executive of Topline Securities, noted that the stocks reached the 90,000 mark in one of the fastest record gains of 125pc in 18 months.

The PSX’s upward momentum continued throughout the week, with the index surpassing the 89,000 mark on Thursday.

Most analysts predict the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) will reduce its policy rate by 200 basis points in its upcoming meeting on November 4. This would mark the fourth consecutive rate cut since June.

Topline Securities, in its report, commented that bulls dominated the PSX as the KSE-100 index surged to an all-time high of 89,126, up 1,931 points, or 2.22%, before closing at 88,946, higher by 2.01%.

Investor optimism was fuelled by expectations ahead of the monetary policy meeting scheduled for November 4. Market sentiment suggested that two significant policy rate cuts may be on the horizon, prompting a wave of stock buying that propelled the index to the historic peak, it said.

Also, investors were shifting their fixed-income portfolios to equities, further boosting market momentum, Topline added.

Karachi, Lahore among most polluted cities of world

Karachi Lahore, most polluted cities, air quality

KARACHI: Karachi becomes the second and Lahore third most polluted cities of the world today as pollution on the rise in two largest cities of Pakistan ahead of coming winter.

Indian capital New Delhi was on the top of the world’s most polluted cities’ list.

Karachi has 198 reading on the Air Quality Index, while Lahore has 192 AQI reading.

India’s Delhi has 252 AQI reading.

It is to be mentioned here that AQI as high as 151-200 is considered unhealthy, while an AQI reading between 201 to 300 is more harmful and AQI reading above 300 mark is extremely hazardous.

According to experts, the air becomes heavier in the winter, causing poisonous particles in the atmosphere to move downwards and making the atmosphere polluted. As a result, a layer of polluted particles, including large amounts of carbon and smoke, covers an area.

The smoke produced by factories or by burning coal, garbage, oil or tyres, enters the atmosphere and its impact appears at the onset of the winter and remains till the end of the season, experts said.

Although southwestern winds blowing from the sea in Karachi, work as a filter for the air, these winds remain mostly suspended during the winter.

ML-I project decided to be completed in two phases: sources

ML-I project, divided in two phases, Mainline railway project

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and China have decided to divide the 6.8 billion dollars’ cost mainline (ML-1) railway project into two phases, sources here said.

“The sides will sign two separate agreements for the Phase-I and II of the ML-1 railway project,” sources at the finance ministry said.

“The Phase-I agreement of 3.2 bln dollars, likely to be executed in the next month,” sources said.

Feasibility study prior to the Phase-II agreement will be held after completion of the first phase of the project, sources further said.

“In the first phase, railway line will be completed from Karachi to Hyderabad, and Hyderabad to Multan,” according to sources.

“In the second phase of the ML-I, railway track will be built from Multan to Peshawar,” sources said.

The financing terms and conditions will be finalized with the Chinese officials in the current month. “The long-term financing will be taken from China for the Phase-I of the ML-I”.

“Pakistan intending to borrow low-interest loan from China for the mainline project,” sources shared.

Pakistan was earlier negotiating with China for 6.8 billion dollars financing for the ML-I, sources said. The sides didn’t agree over a combined agreement for the whole project, ministry sources added.

The development and renovation of Karachi-Lahore-Peshawar railway track, known as ML-I project, is planned under the flagship CPEC project.

The ML-I project is based on total length of 1,872 kilometers. The PML-N government in the past had also decided to divide the project into two, because of its elevated costs and widespread work which necessitates renovation and extension of the main railway line.

ICC plans major changes to revive Test, ODI cricket

ICC plans major changes to revive Test, ODI cricket

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is set to introduce significant changes to promote Test and One-Day International (ODI) cricket.

The global cricket-governing body is now pondering having a minimum of three Test matches in every series which is a part of the World Test Championship (WTC).

The ICC’s cricket committee has also suggested the use of two balls within the first 25 overs only in an ODI game.

The ICC’s cricket committee proposed several changes during meetings in Dubai.

“Some countries like South Africa, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka mostly play just two-Test series. Only India, England, and Australia play long Test series. That doesn’t help in promoting Test cricket, and the point distribution becomes very unfair,” an ICC source stated.

The ICC believes Day-Night Tests have boosted stadium attendance. “The ICC committee feels the pink-ball Tests have brought more people into the stadiums. Recently, one saw very poor turnouts in Pakistan. The three pink-ball Tests in India sold more tickets than usual,” the source added.

The ICC will seek feedback from captains on the proposed ODI changes. “The recommendation will be sent to the captains. A consensus must be achieved on this. But this looks the best option to bring reverse swing and finger spinners back into the game,” the source said.

ODI reforms:

  • Using two balls only within the first 25 overs
  • Reverting to one ball for the remaining overs to promote reverse swing and finger spin

Test Cricket reforms:

  • Minimum of three Test matches per series in the World Test Championship (WTC)
  • Increased Day-Night Tests to attract more spectators
  • Encouraging host nations to schedule more pink-ball Tests

WHO declares Egypt malaria free after nearly century of efforts

WHO Malaria free Egypt

Egypt has achieved a significant milestone in public health as the World Health Organization (WHO) certified the nation as malaria-free, marking the elimination of a disease that had pagued the country since ancient times.

The WHO grants certification to countries that prove, beyond reasonable doubt, that the chain of indigenous malaria transmission by Anopheles mosquitoes has been interrupted for at least the previous three consecutive years.

Now, the status has been granted to a total of 44 countries and one territory globally, the WHO said in a statement.

The WHO called the achievement “truly historic” and the culmination of nearly a century of work to stamp out the disease, AFP reported.

“Malaria is as old as Egyptian civilisation itself, but the disease that plagued pharaohs now belongs to its history and not its future,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement.

“This certification of Egypt as malaria-free is truly historic, and a testament to the commitment of the people and government of Egypt to rid themselves of this ancient scourge.”

“Receiving the malaria elimination certificate today is not the end of the journey but the beginning of a new phase,” said Egypt´s Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar.

“We must now work tirelessly and vigilantly to sustain our achievement through maintaining the highest standards for surveillance, diagnosis and treatment.”

To be certified malaria free, a country must also demonstrate the ability to prevent the re-establishment of transmission.

Spread by mosquitoes, malaria is mostly found in tropical countries and the infection is caused by a parasite, that kills more than 600,000 people every year, 95% of them in Africa, according to the WHO.

There were 249 million recorded malaria cases worldwide in 2022.

The WHO said that early efforts to reduce human-mosquito contact in Egypt started in the 1920s with a ban on rice and crop cultivation near homes.

By 1942, malaria cases in Egypt had spiked to over three million due to population displacement during World War II.

The construction of the Aswan Dam, built in the 1960s, introduced new risks with stagnant water creating mosquito breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

However, by 2001, Egypt had malaria “firmly under control”, the WHO said.

Power sector subsidies surge by 400% in five Years: World Bank

Pakistan, power sector subsidy, World Bank

ISLAMABAD: The World Bank has revealed that the power sector subsidies in Pakistan have increased by a staggering 400% in the last five years, putting a major burden on the federal government’s finances, ARY News reported.

According to the World Bank report, the growing number of protected consumers has contributed to the surge in subsidy burden, with 94% of domestic consumers benefiting from the budgetary subsidy in 2024.

The power sector subsidy has climbed from Rs. 236 billion in the financial year 2020 to Rs. 1190 billion in the current financial year, a staggering increase of Rs. 954 billion.

The inability to reduce losses and poor recovery of electricity bills have contributed to the circular debt, which has averaged Rs. 400 billion annually for the past four years despite reforms.

The World Bank has warned that the increasing electricity tariffs and poor revenue collection will continue to exacerbate the circular debt crisis, making it essential for the government to address the underlying issues in the power sector to reduce the subsidy burden and circular debt.

READ: World Bank concerned over Pakistan’s power sector circular debt

Earlier, the World Bank (WB) expressed concerns over the rise in Pakistan’s power sector circular debt despite historic hike in electricity tariffs.

The World Bank stated in its report that over the past six years, the debt has increased by 1241 billion rupees, with an increase of 1128 billion rupees between 2019 and 2021.

The World Bank reported that the power sector’s circular debt has been growing at an alarming rate, with a notable increase of 113 billion rupees between 2022 and 2024.

As of 2024, the total volume of circular debt in Pakistan’s power sector has reached 2393 billion rupees.

The World Bank emphasized the need for reforms to address the circular debt problem.

Iran’s foreign minister makes rare trip to Egypt

Iran, foreign minister Iran, Egypt

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi landed in Cairo late on Wednesday for talks with Egyptian officials, the first such visit in years as part of a Middle Eastern tour amid concerns of a wider confrontation in the region with Israel.

Tensions are high in anticipation of the nature of an expected Israeli attack on Iran in retaliation for Iran’s missile attack on Oct. 1. That followed a rapidly spiralling conflict between Israel and Iranian-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Araqchi arrived for “important talks with Egypt’s high ranking officials that will be held tomorrow [Thursday],” Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said in a post on X on Wednesday, after stops in countries including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iraq and Lebanon.

Relations between Egypt and Iran have generally been fraught in recent decades but the two countries have stepped up high-level diplomatic contacts since the eruption of the Gaza crisis last year as Egypt tried to play a mediating role.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty traveled to Tehran in July to attend the country’s presidential inauguration.

South Korea’s Han sells one million books after Nobel win

Nobel winner Han Kang, one million books sold, South Korea

SEOUL: More than a million copies of books by Han Kang, the first South Korean to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, have sold locally since the honour was announced, bookstores said Wednesday.

The short story writer and novelist is best known overseas for her Man Booker Prize-winning “The Vegetarian”, her first novel translated into English.

The 53-year-old, who also became the first Asian woman author to win the Nobel, was chosen “for her intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life”, the Swedish Academy said last week.

Han’s win has created a sensation in South Korea, with the websites of major bookstores and publishing houses crashing after it was announced, as tens of thousands rushed to order her books.

As of Wednesday morning, at least 1.06 million copies, including e-books, had been sold since last Thursday’s Nobel announcement, three major bookstores and online retailers — Kyobo, Aladin and YES24 — told AFP.

“Han Kang’s books are experiencing unprecedented sales. This is a situation we have never seen before,” Kyobo spokesperson Kim Hyun-jung told AFP.

Online bookstore Aladin said Han’s victory had not only led to a staggering 1,200-fold increase in the sales of her books compared with the same period last year, but dramatically boosted the sales of South Korean literature as a whole.

Since her win, “the overall sales of Korean literature increased by more than 12 times compared to the previous year”, it said in a statement.

Sales of two books Han recently mentioned she was reading — “Inventory of Losses” by Judith Schalansky and “Atlas de botanique élémentaire” by Jean-Jacques Rousseau — had also surged, Aladin said.

Kyobo Book Centre said while it does not have exact figures, Han’s books had seen dramatically higher sales compared with other Nobel prize winners.

“We have been in the publishing industry for a while, but this whole situation feels very surreal even to some of us,” a Kyobo employee told AFP.

South Koreans have been overjoyed by the news, with Han’s alma mater, Seoul’s Yonsei University, displaying banners that read: “Congratulations to the proud Yonsei alumnus, Han Kang, on winning the Nobel Prize in Literature.”

In her hometown of Gwangju — where a massacre occurred in 1980 that later inspired Han’s acclaimed novel “Human Acts” — a congratulatory banner was hung on a building fired on by a military helicopter at the time.

Local reports said some printing houses had been operating at full capacity on the weekend to meet the demand for Han’s books.

“I’ve never been this busy since I joined the company in 2006,” an Aladin employee told AFP.

“But it’s all been very happy.”

LAHORE: The first batch of twenty-seven Palestinian medical students from Gaza arrived in Lahore to continue their studies in Pakistan, ARY News reported.

As per details, the Palestinian students arrived in Pakistan via an international airline from Istanbul and were moved to a local hotel in a strict security.

Before arriving in Lahore, the officials of Embassy of Pakistan in Cairo and representatives of Al-Khidmat Foundation facilitated the departure of Palestinian students from Cairo International Airport to Lahore.

This batch of students is part of one hundred and ninety-two Palestinian medical students from war torn Gaza who will continue their medical and dental studies in various medical institutes in Pakistan.

Under the directives of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, these students will be facilitated to continue their studies in Pakistani medical universities on fully funded programmes.

READ: 250,000 in southern Gaza hit by Israel’s new evacuation order: UN

It is worth mentioning here that the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) earlier approved special permission for medical and dental students from Gaza to complete their education in Pakistan.

According to a spokesperson, the decision was made at the request of the Pakistani High Commissioner in London.

The PMDC president said that it is expected that around 100 medical and dental students from Gaza will come to Pakistan.

The students will be adjusted in Pakistani medical and dental colleges, and the committee will ensure the smooth completion of their education, he added.

The approval came after the UN agency supporting Palestinian refugees estimated that a quarter of a million people had been impacted since Israel’s army issued a new evacuation order for parts of southern Gaza a day earlier.

“We’ve seen people moving, families moving, people starting to pack up their belongings and try to leave this area,” UNRWA spokeswoman Louise Wateridge told reporters in Geneva via video-link from Gaza.

The agency “estimates that around 250,000 people have been impacted by these orders”, she said, adding: “We expect these numbers to grow”.

Israel’s offensive in Gaza has killed at least 42,000 people, mostly civilians, according to data from the health ministry in the territory.
