US Senate bill, US to cut Pakistan aid, Pakistan, China, India

WASHINGTON: The United States (US) Senate has introduced a bill seeking to cut off aid to Pakistan if it takes action against India.

The bill titled “US-India Defense Cooperation Act”, was tabled by Republican Senator Marco Rubio in the US Senate.

The bill emphasizes strengthening ties with New Delhi as if it were of the same status as U.S. allies such as Japan, Israel, Korea, NATO allies regarding technology transfers and in case of a threat, the US will provide necessary security assistance to India.

The Republican Senator Marco Rubio urged to expedite excess defense articles to India for two years, grant India the same status as other allies and expand International Military Education and Training Cooperation with New Delhi.

The bill asked US to provide a limited exemption for India from CAATSA sanctions for purchases of Russian equipment that are currently used by the Indian military.

READ: India PM Modi tells Putin ‘war cannot solve problems’

It is pertinent to mention here that Russia is a vital supplier of cut-price oil and weapons to India, but Moscow’s isolation from the West and growing ties with Beijing have impacted its partnership with New Delhi.

Western powers have in recent years also cultivated stronger relations with New Delhi as a hedge against China and its growing influence across the Asia-Pacific, while pressuring New Delhi to distance itself from Russia.

The United States also urged Modi to make clear in his talks with Putin that “any resolution to the conflict in Ukraine must… be one that respects the UN Charter with respect to Ukraine’s territorial integrity”.

“The accused have been arrested from various localities of Multan,” a spokesperson of the FIA has stated.

Four accused namely Sadiq Hussain, Mohammad Ijaz, Ghulam Nazik and Ghulam Yaseen were arrested by the investigation agency.

“These agents were recruiting citizens for begging in Saudi Arabia, and they used to receive their share from the money begged in the holy land,” FIA said.

FIA spokesperson said that nine passengers destined to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, were arrested yesterday.

The FIA recently offloaded eight passengers at Multan Airport from a Saudi Arabia bound flight.

The passengers, who were traveling to Saudi Arabia on Umrah visas, were found with 900 packets of cigarettes and other items.

Bangladesh extends curfew amid deadly protests

Bangladesh, Protests in Bangladesh, curfew extended, Bangladesh controversial job quotas

Bangladesh extended a curfew on Sunday to control violent student-led protests that have killed at least 114 people, as authorities braced for a Supreme Court hearing later in the day on government job quotas that sparked the anger.

Soldiers have been on patrol on the streets of capital Dhaka, the centre of the demonstrations that spiralled into clashes between protesters and security forces.

Internet and text message services in Bangladesh have been suspended since Thursday, cutting the nation off as police cracked down on protesters who defied a ban on public gatherings.

A curfew ordered late on Friday has been extended to 3 p.m. (0900 GMT) on Sunday, until after the Supreme Court hearing, and will continue for an “uncertain time” following a two-hour break for people to gather supplies, local media reported.

Universities and colleges have also been closed since Wednesday.

Nationwide unrest broke out following student anger against quotas for government jobs that included reserving 30% for the families of those who fought for independence from Pakistan.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government had scrapped the quota system in 2018, but a court reinstated it last month.

The Supreme Court suspended the decision after a government appeal and will hear the case on Sunday after agreeing to bring forward a hearing scheduled for Aug. 7.

The demonstrations – the biggest since Hasina was re-elected for a fourth successive term this year – have also been fuelled by high unemployment among young people, who make up nearly a fifth of the population.

The U.S. State Department on Saturday raised its travel advisory for Bangladesh to level four, urging American citizens to not travel to the South Asian country.

Bangladesh court to rule on job quotas that sparked unrest

Bangladesh court, job quotas ruling, students unrest

DHAKA: Bangladesh’s top court was due to rule Sunday on the future of civil service hiring rules that sparked nationwide clashes between police and university students, killing 151 people.

What began as a protest against politicised admission quotas for sought-after government jobs snowballed this week into some of the worst unrest of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s tenure.

Soldiers were patrolling cities across Bangladesh after riot police failed to restore order, while a nationwide internet blackout since Thursday has drastically restricted the flow of information to the outside world.

The Supreme Court was in session on Sunday ahead of an expected verdict on whether to abolish the contentious job quotas.

Hasina, whose opponents accuse her government of bending the judiciary to her will, hinted to the public this week that the scheme would be scrapped.

But after the mounting crackdown and a rising death toll, a favourable verdict is unlikely to mollify white-hot public anger.

“It’s not about the rights of the students anymore,” business owner Hasibul Sheikh, 24, told AFP at the scene of a Saturday street protest, held in the capital Dhaka in defiance of a nationwide curfew.

“Our demand is one point now, and that’s the resignation of the government.”

The catalyst for this month’s unrest is a system that reserves more than half of civil service posts for specific groups, including children of veterans from the country’s 1971 liberation war against Pakistan.

Critics say the scheme benefits families loyal to Hasina, 76, who has ruled the country since 2009 and won her fourth consecutive election in January after a vote without genuine opposition.

Hasina’s government is accused by rights groups of misusing state institutions to entrench its hold on power and stamp out dissent, including by the extrajudicial killing of opposition activists.

With Bangladesh unable to provide adequate employment opportunities for its 170 million people, the quota scheme is a pronounced source of resentment among young graduates facing an acute jobs crisis.

Hasina inflamed tensions this month by likening protesters to the Bangladeshis who had collaborated with Pakistan during the country’s 1971 independence war.

“Rather than try to address the protesters’ grievances, the government’s actions have made the situation worse,” Crisis Group’s Asia director Pierre Prakash told AFP.

Hasina had been due to leave the country on Sunday for a diplomatic tour to Spain and Brazil but abandoned her plans after a week of escalating violence.

Since Tuesday at least 151 people, including several police officers, have been killed in clashes around the country, according to an AFP count of victims reported by police and hospitals.

Police have arrested several members of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Students Against Discrimination, the main protest organising group.

Bangladesh home minister Asaduzzaman Khan told AFP that the curfew imposed on Saturday would continue “until the situation improves”.

He said that in addition to the torching of government buildings and police posts by protesters, arson attacks had left Dhaka’s metro rail network inoperable.

“They are carrying out destructive activities targeting the government,” Khan said, blaming the BNP and the Islamist party Jamaat for stoking the violence.

On Friday a crowd of thousands besieged a prison in the central district of Narsingdi armed with machetes and steel rods, freeing more than 800 prisoners before setting part of the facility ablaze.

“They set fire to three barracks in the jail including a two-floor building,” the jail’s warden Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad told AFP. “They freed the inmates. We took refuge in our homes. Some of us were injured.”

The US State Department warned Americans on Saturday not to travel to Bangladesh and said it would begin removing some diplomats and their families from the country due to the civil unrest.

Reserved seats verdict: Hearing on PML-N’s review plea after two months

Reserved seats verdict: Hearing on PML-N's review plea after two months

ISLAMABAD: The review petition filed by PML-N against the Supreme Court’s ruling on reserved seats case is likely to be fixed for hearing after two months, ARY News reported on Friday quoting sources.

According to sources, the review petition has been forwarded to the judges’ committee on practice and procedure after allotting it a number.

Two members of the committee have agreed to fix the petition for hearing after two months, say sources.

The sources said the majority of the members recommended hearing the petition after the vacations of the Supreme Court so that all the judges could be available.

The plea

The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had filed a review petition against the Supreme Court’s verdict declaring PTI as eligible for reserved seats.

The PML-N filed a review petition in the apex court, urging the top court to withdraw its July 12 order.

In its peal, the PML-N argued that the PTI was not even a party in the case as it was Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) which approached the Supreme Court.

The PML-N plea stated that SC’s order to award reserved seats to PTI on SIC plea is tantamount to violation of law.

The PML-N in its petition had made the SIC and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) as respondents.

Last week, a 13-member bench of the top court, headed by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, ruled that the PTI is eligible for the allocation of reserved seats, dealing a major setback to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s ruling coalition.

Justice Mansoor Ali Shah announced the 8-5 majority verdict, setting aside the Peshawar High Court’s (PHC) order wherein it had upheld the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) decision denying the reserved seats to the SIC.

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa, Justice Jamal Mandokhail, Justice Naeem Afghan, Justice Yahya Afridi, and Justice Ameenuddin Khan opposed the majority decision.
