At least 30 killed in Kenya anti-government protests: HRW

At least 30 killed in Kenya anti-government protests: HRW

At least 30 people died in protests in Kenya this week sparked by a government drive to substantially raise taxes in the East African country, Human Rights Watch said Saturday.

“Kenyan security forces shot directly into crowds of protesters on (Tuesday) June 25, 2024, including protesters who were fleeing,” the NGO said in a statement.

“Although there is no confirmation on the exact number of people killed in Nairobi and other towns, Human Rights Watch found that at least 30 people had been killed on that day based on witness accounts, publicly available information, hospital and mortuary records in Nairobi as well as witness accounts,” the statement said.

“Shooting directly into crowds without justification, including as protesters try to flee, is completely unacceptable under Kenyan and international law,” said Otsieno Namwaya, associate Africa director at Human Rights Watch.

“The Kenyan authorities need to make clear to their forces that they should be protecting peaceful protesters and that impunity for police violence can no longer be tolerated,” Namwaya added.

The largely peaceful rallies turned violent on Tuesday when lawmakers passed the deeply unpopular tax increases following pressure from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

After the announcement of the vote, crowds stormed the parliament complex and a fire broke out in clashes unprecedented in the history of the country since its independence from Britain in 1963.

President William Ruto’s administration ultimately withdrew the bill.

IMF pressure

The state-funded Kenya National Commission on Human Rights said it had recorded 22 deaths and 300 injured victims, adding it would open an investigation.

“Eight military officers came out and just opened fire on people. They killed several people, including those who were not part of the protests,” HRW quoted a rights activist in Nairobi as saying.

“Kenya’s international partners should continue to actively monitor the situation… and further urge Kenyan authorities to speedily but credibly and transparently investigate abuses by the security forces,” the rights watchdog said.

Ruto had already rolled back some tax measures after the protests began, prompting the treasury to warn of a gaping budget shortfall of 200 billion shillings ($1.6 billion).

The cash-strapped government had said previously that the increases were necessary to service Kenya’s massive debt of some 10 trillion shillings ($78 billion), equal to roughly 70 percent of GDP.

The Washington-based IMF has urged the country to implement fiscal reforms in order to access crucial funding from the international lender.

“The bill was  expected to raise an additional $2.3 billion in the next fiscal year, in part to meet IMF requirements to increase revenues,” HRW said.

“Widespread outrage should be a wake-up call to the Kenyan government and the IMF that they cannot sacrifice rights in the name of economic recovery,” Namwaya said.

“Economic sustainability can only be achieved by building a new social contract that raises revenues fairly, manages them responsibly, and funds services and programs that protect everyone’s rights.”

WikiLeaks says Julian Assange is ‘free’ after US plea deal

Julian Assange has been released from prison and left Britain, WikiLeaks said, as he reached a landmark plea deal with US authorities that brought an end to his years-long legal drama.

“Julian Assange is free,” WikiLeaks wrote on X of its founder, who had been detained in Britain for five years as he fought extradition to the United States which sought to prosecute him for revealing military secrets.

He has agreed to plead guilty to a single count of conspiracy to obtain and disseminate national defence information, according to a document filed in court in the Northern Mariana Islands in the Pacific.

A charter plane flew Assange, 52, from London to Bangkok, where it had been scheduled to stop for refuelling.

AFP journalists saw it touch down at Bangkok’s Don Mueang airport at around 12:30 pm (0530 GMT).

From there it is scheduled to fly to Saipan, capital of the US territory where Assange will appear in court on Wednesday morning.

Assange is expected to be sentenced to five years and two months in prison, with credit for the same amount of time spent behind bars in Britain.

This means he could return to his native Australia, where the government said his case had “dragged on for too long” and there was “nothing to be gained by his continued incarceration.”

The publisher was wanted by Washington for publishing hundreds of thousands of secret US documents from 2010 as head of the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks.

Since then Assange became a hero to free speech campaigners and a villain to those who thought he endangered US security and intelligence sources.

US authorities wanted to put Assange on trial for divulging military secrets about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Assange was indicted by a US federal grand jury in 2019 on 18 counts stemming from WikiLeaks’ publication of a trove of national security documents.

Former vice president Mike Pence slammed the plea deal on X as a “miscarriage of justice” that “dishonors the service and sacrifice of the men and women of our Armed Forces.”

Extradition battle

WikiLeaks released a short video of Assange speaking with people in what appeared to be an office and then boarding a plane.

Assange’s family expressed deep gratitude for his freedom, including his mother Christine Assange who said in a statement carried by Australian media that she was “grateful that my son’s ordeal is finally coming to an end.”

His wife Stella meanwhile thanked campaigners, writing on X that “words cannot express our immense gratitude.”

Assange met his wife while he was holed up in Ecuador’s London embassy, then married her in a ceremony in prison. They now have two young children.

Announcement of the deal came two weeks before Assange was scheduled to appear in court in Britain to appeal a ruling approving his extradition to the United States.

Assange had been detained in the high-security Belmarsh prison in London since April 2019.

He was arrested after spending seven years in Ecuador’s London embassy to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he faced accusations of sexual assault that were eventually dropped.

The material he released included video showing civilians being killed by fire from a US helicopter gunship in Iraq in 2007. The victims included two Reuters journalists.

The United States has accused Assange under the 1917 Espionage Act. Supporters have warned this means he could be sentenced to 175 years in prison.

The British government approved his extradition in June 2022.

In the latest twist to the saga, two British judges said in May that he could appeal against his extradition to the United States.

The appeal was to address the question of whether, as a foreigner on trial in America, he would enjoy the protections of freedom of speech accorded under the First Amendment to the US Constitution.

The plea deal was not entirely unexpected. President Joe Biden had been under growing pressure to drop the long-running case against Assange.

In February the Australian government made an official request to this effect and Biden said he would consider it, raising hopes among Assange supporters that his ordeal might end.

Emma Shortis, senior researcher at The Australia Institute think tank, told AFP that both Canberra and Washington had a “recognition that this had to end.”

“There was just no way this wasn’t becoming an issue for the (US-Australia) alliance,” Shortis said.

On the streets of Sydney, Nish Veer, a 41-year-old IT business manager, told AFP that Assange had “did something that angered a lot of people, obviously… but after time you just go should anyone be held in that sort of way?”

64-year-old retiree John Blanco said he was “very happy” Assange was returning to Australia after so many years. “I think he’s gone through hell, to be honest with you.”

Omar Ayub, PTI leaders, May 9 case

FAISALABAD: The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) granted bail to NA opposition leader Omar Ayub Khan and other Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders in May 9 cases, ARY News reported.

As per details, the Anti-Terrorism Court heard the case against PTI leaders, including Omar Ayub, Shibli Faraz, Azam Swati, Zartaj Gul, Zain Qureshi and former party leader Fawad Chaudhry.

The police failed to present the record of four cases and witnesses in court. At this, the judge expressed annoyance with the investigation officer.

Due to the lack of evidence against the accused, the court granted bail to all the defendants.

READ: Omar Ayub’s pre-arrest bail extended in May 9 case

In March, Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) delivered its verdict against the 51 accused in May 9 riots cases.

Judge Natasha Naseem Supra of ATC Court heard the case and outlined the charges against each of the accused, who were identified as workers affiliated with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). The judge sentenced each of the 51 defendants to five years of imprisonment under various provisions.

May 9 violence

Violent clashes were broken out across Pakistan after former prime minister Imran Khan was arrested on May 9, 2023.

The protests were held in remote and major cities as the party workers were agitated due to their chairman’s arrest, with Balochistan, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Islamabad summoning the armed forces to ensure law and order.

Army installations, including Corps Commander’s house in Lahore, had come under attack during the protests by PTI workers.

It is pertinent to mention that the PTI founder is named as main accused in all the May 9 riots cases.

However, when the media reporters approached veteran actor and politician Shatrughan Sinha for confirmation regarding his daughter’s wedding, he maintained, “I am not aware of this [the supposed wedding].”

“All I can say is, aaj kal ke bachche consent nahin lete maa-baap ke, sirf inform karte hain (kids these days don’t ask for parents’ consent, rather inform them). We are waiting to be informed,” he added. “As a consenting adult, she has the right to make her own decisions.”

Babar Azam opens up on captaincy, disappointing T20 World Cup exit

Babar Azam, T20 world cup 2024, Pakistan team captaincy,

Star Pakistani batter Babar Azam opened up on the captaincy and disappointing T20 World Cup 2024 campaign of the Pakistani team.

Addressing a post-match press conference, Pakistan captain Babar Azam said the team’s batting let them down at the Twenty20 World Cup and apologized to fans for failing to reach the Super Eight stage.

Pakistan fell to the tournament’s biggest upset when the United States, a tier-two member of the game, beat the 2009 champions via Super Over. Defeat by arch-rivals India then left Babar’s side with a mountain to climb to advance.

India and the U.S. bagged the two Super Eight slots from Group A while Pakistan finished third after Sunday’s laboured three-wicket victory against Ireland.

“Thank you so much for supporting us, and sorry for that performance…,” Babar said after the match in Florida.

READ: T20 World Cup 2024: Pakistan close out on a winning note

“I know the fans and the team are saddened by this. It is not any one player’s fault. We all made a mistake.”

Babar had stepped down as captain of all three formats after Pakistan failed to make the knockout stage of the 50-overs World Cup in India last year, but was reinstated as white-ball skipper ahead of the 20-overs showpiece in the U.S. and West Indies.

Amid sub-par performances at the tournament, talk of rifts within the camp surfaced, while Pakistan Cricket Board’s chief promised “major surgery” on the team after their exit was confirmed last week.

Pakistan’s batting was a huge disappointment as they failed to make the most of the powerplay overs and could not get partnerships established.

“The pitches here helped the fast bowlers a little but I think overall our batting did not click,” said Babar.

“We lost two crucial matches even when we were in charge.”

All-rounder Imad Wasim has said the team needed a complete reset of their approach to white-ball cricket and Babar agreed.

“Every player has to think, because cricket has become very fast. With modern cricket, you must have game awareness,” he said.

“You know that the strike rate here is (low)… I think it’s about game awareness and common sense.”

The Green Shirts were knocked out of the group stage of the marquee event for the first time due to embarrassing losses against the United States of America (USA) and India.

They defeated Canada to maintain their Super 8s hopes, but the crucial match between the USA and Ireland was rained out, leading to the USA’s qualification for the next round.

Babar Azam’s side then registered a consolation victory over Ireland in their last match, with the star batter leading the run-chase with an unbeaten 32 off 34 deliveries.

T20 World Cup 2024: Bangladesh beat Nepal to claim final Super Eight spot

T20 World Cup 2024, Bangladesh, Nepal, super eight round

Bangladesh grabbed the final spot in the Super Eight phase of the T20 World Cup 2024 with a 21-run victory over Nepal on Sunday.

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and his team joined India, Australia and Afghanistan in Group 1 of the Super Eight following their victory in Kingstown, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Pace bowler Tanzim Hasan Sakib was the standout performer for Bangladesh, taking four for seven as Nepal struggled to 85 all out off 19.2 overs in reply to Bangladesh’s 106 from 19.3 on yet another Caribbean pitch offering plenty of assistance to the bowlers.

Shanto praised the performance of his bowlers in another low-scoring match in the tournament.

“We are not scoring much but we know we can defend low totals if we can pick up early wickets,” he said.

Former champions Sri Lanka, who finished third in the group and did not progress, concluded their campaign with an 83-run victory against the Netherlands in St Lucia.

Sri Lanka amassed 201 for six with Kusal Mendis (46), Charith Asalanka (46) and Angelo Matthews (30 not out) leading the charge and the target was always beyond the reach of the Dutch team, who were bowled out for 118 from 16.4 overs.

“After bad first two games this win is very healthy for us,” said Sri Lanka captain Wanindu Hasaranga.

“The wicket was really good, we just wanted to put a 160-170 scores on this wicket.”

bts jin, hug event, bts army

BTS ARMY, who allegedly kissed K-pop star Jin of the band without consent, face sexual assault charges in Seoul, after the recent hug event.

Watch ARY News live on live.arynews.tv

A day after completing his mandatory military service, in northern Yeoncheon County, South Korea, BTS star Jin hosted a hug Festa, in order to reunite with the fans for the 11th anniversary of the K-pop band, as his remaining bandmates, continue to serve on the duty.

At the wholesome event in Seoul Jamsil Indoor Gymnasium, 1000 lucky fans got the golden opportunity to meet and hug the K-pop star. However, in unforeseen consequences, some fans attempted to kiss him on his cheeks, sparking controversy and leaving BTS ARMY angered.bts jin, hug event, bts army Now the reports from a Korean entertainment publication suggest that fans who kissed BTS star Jin at the hug Festa, are facing sexual harassment charges at Seoul Songpa Police Station.

The officials confirmed that the complaint has been filed through the National Petition System, addressing a potential violation of the Sexual Violence Punishment Act.

The plaintiff ‘A’ stated through an online fan community forum, “In the middle of Jin’s offline fan meeting with 1000 fans in celebration of his military discharge, it was reported that some fans attempted sexual harassment, which angered me as a fan who enjoys BTS’ music. The fans who sexually harassed Jin should be immediately investigated and punished under Article 11 of the Sexual Violence Punishment Act for ‘molestation in a crowded place’.”

Notably, Jin, the oldest member of the boys’ septet, who was the first one to enlist for mandatory military duty, was discharged from the service earlier this week.

For the uninitiated, South Korea requires all able-bodied men aged between 18 and 28 to serve in the military for about two years, a measure that has long been a source of controversy. A 2019 revision of the law allowed globally recognised K-pop sensation, BTS to delay service until the age of 30.

The K-pop juggernaut is currently on self-described hiatus, for all seven singers to fulfil their same duty.

In Ukraine, soldiers and civilians shrug off Zelensky’s summit

Ukraine, soldiers and civilians, Zelensky summit

KRAMATORSK, Ukraine: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has lofty ambitions for a summit in Switzerland this weekend, but on the front line and in war-fatigued Kyiv, hopes for any major breakthrough are nearly nil.

The conference convening some 90 countries and global institutions is coming at a perilous moment for exhausted Ukrainians and outgunned soldiers, after more than two years of war.

Sergiy, a deputy commander of a tank brigade deployed to the eastern Donetsk region where fighting is fiercest, said that when powerbrokers sit down to really thrash out an end to fighting, it probably won’t be at a plush summit.

“Politics is politics,” the 36-year-old told AFP, sceptical that the meeting would improve the situation in the Donetsk.

“Good weapons will do something, that’s for sure.”

Danylo, a 23-year-old drone operator also said the gathering would not bring about “drastic” changes.

“It’s probably more of a symbolic event,” he said.

Under-resourced Ukrainian forces have been ceding village after village in the east and north to determined Russian attacks, forcing authorities to announce mandatory civilian evacuations.

No ‘high hopes’

The army has launched a mobilisation drive that has instilled fear among the population that fathers, husbands and sons will be dispatched to the front.

And Russian strikes have knocked out or hindered electricity supplies for millions of Ukrainians, leaving them in the dark for hours on end.

In the capital, 36-year-old Victoria, who works in the energy industry, said she was “exhausted” by the war and that she wanted to believe the summit would help end it.

But her expectations were tempered.

“I’m a realist in life, so I don’t have high hopes.”

Zelensky has said one of the key points raised at the summit would be the return of Ukrainian prisoners of war.

The issue has deep resonance with 40-year-old Lidia Rybas, who says she has “big expectations” for the talks in Switzerland.

“My own brother is a prisoner of war with the Russians. I am more concerned about this topic,” she said.

Oleksandr, a 22-year-old information security specialist, was blunt.

“I believe that the war will end in a brutal military way,” he said, allowing that the meeting might offer some momentary “hope.”

“But still, the issue of ending the war will be decided on the battlefield,” he added.

‘Come home alive’

That is a worrying prospect for Ukraine, whose forces have been losing ground in the Donetsk region, and also in the border region of Kharkiv.

Zelensky has been urging allies to step up arms supplies — particularly air defence systems — to counter Russia’s advance and restore Ukrainian territory as part of his 10-point plan that will dominate the agenda at the summit.

Back in Donetsk, a region the Kremlin claims is part of Russia, 38-year-old tank company commander Maksym echoed the reservations of other servicemen around the summit.

“I’d like to hope that it will bring some changes in the future. But, as experience shows, nothing comes of it,” he said.

Some servicemen said they would not be following the summit at all.

“We just don’t have time to watch the news. We don’t even have time to just call our families,” said Oleksandr, also in the tank brigade.

On the front, holding back assaults from Russian forces, tired and tunnel-visioned Ukrainian servicemen have a different set of priorities, the 53-year-old said.

“All the guys want to come home alive,” he told AFP.
