Start me up: Rolling Stones kick off North America tour in Houston

the rolling stones, north america tour

The Rolling Stones kicked off their North America tour at a sold-out venue in Houston on Sunday, with people travelling from various cities to watch one of the world’s most enduring rock bands amid worries that this could be their last tour.

Watch ARY News live on live.arynews.tv

The show was the first of 16 performances, set across the U.S. and Canada through July.

Fans flocked to the NRG Stadium in Houston in Rolling Stones T-shirts showcasing the band’s iconic lips and tongue logo.

The band, formed more than six decades ago, opened with ‘Start Me Up’ with Mick Jagger walking onto the stage in a shiny striped jacket, a grey sequined shirt and black jeans. People immediately started to dance along to the 1981 classic.

Jagger, who is 80, danced, skipped and ran across the stage while showcasing his vocal range.

“Hello Houston, it’s good to be back in the lone star state,” Jagger said, adding that the band visited NASA’s Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston and made quips about Texas-based convenience store chain Buc-ee’s.

He performed alongside Keith Richards, 80, and Ronnie Wood, 76, the surviving core of the band.

“Every time I see them, it’s such a joy. They’re amazing. They take such true joy in playing,” said Greta Brasgalla, 56, who travelled from El Paso, Texas, to watch the band for the seventh time. She also plans to watch the Rolling Stones in Atlanta in June.

The band attracted people of all ages to the stadium, with a significant proportion of the audience over 60.

The 18 songs played over two hours included a mix of classics and three from the latest record ‘Hackney Diamonds’, the Stones’ first album of original material since 2005 and the first recording since drummer Charlie Watts died in 2021.

Other songs they played included ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash’, ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’ and ‘Out of Time’, all to massive applause.

Richards, whose songwriting partnership with Jagger is one of the most enduring and successful in rock, sang ‘Little T&A’.

The Stones closed the show with ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’. They head to the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival for a special performance this week.

Fans, however, worried that this could be one of the last tours by the Stones.

“Every time we see them, we wonder if it’s going to be the last. That’s our fear,” said Savannah Welch, who travelled from Austin and brought along her son Charlie.

Pakistan working tirelessly to eradicate polio from country, PM tells Bill Gates

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday met founder and co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Bill Gates, wherein he called for a sustained effort by all the partners to reach the ultimate goal of a polio-free Pakistan.

In the meeting held on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Special Meeting, the prime minister highlighted that Pakistan was working tirelessly to eradicate polio from the country, a PM Office press release said.

Earlier, both leaders had featured in a WEF high-level panel discussion titled “Redefining the Global Health Agenda.”

The prime minister thanked Bill Gates for sending him a warm congratulatory letter upon his re-election. Bill Gates recalled the immunization and polio vaccine program in Punjab province under the leadership of Shehbaz Sharif as chief minister and emphasized replicating the same practice across the country to make the immunization program a success.

While fondly recalling their interactions during his previous tenure, the prime minister reaffirmed his commitment to continue working closely with Bill Gates to ensure a stronger partnership between Pakistan and the Gates Foundation.

He thanked the BMGF for its longstanding support for polio eradication in Pakistan. Bill Gates also acknowledged Pakistan’s efforts and said polio eradication was vital to protect future generations from this crippling disease.

In addition to polio, Prime Minister Shehbaz and Bill Gates also discussed progress on ongoing activities between Pakistan and the Foundation in the areas of immunization, nutrition, and financial inclusion.

The prime minister said that the Gates Foundation was a trusted partner in Pakistan’s socio-economic development and sought collaboration in other areas including IT, STEM education and disaster management.

Recalling Bill Gates’ visit to Pakistan in February 2022, the prime minister extended an invitation to him to visit Pakistan again at a time of his convenience.

Biden at White House correspondents’ dinner, amid Gaza conflict protest

Joe Biden student loan

WASHINGTON: President Joe Biden poked fun at himself but took sharp aim at his election rival Donald Trump Saturday at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, as protesters outside demonstrated against the conflict in Gaza.

Guests arrived in black-tie attire as more than 100 protesters confronted attendees in front of the Washington Hilton hotel chanting “shame on you” and other slogans.

Inside, the topic of Gaza was far from the lips of Biden and the evening’s comedian, Colin Jost of “Saturday Night Live,” who roasted Biden for his age and occasional stumble on the Airforce One stairs.

Both Jost and Biden struck a more serious tone in addressing what many Americans feel is a politically fraught moment, with Biden telling attendees Trump’s rhetoric was a danger particularly after the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol, and that “the stakes couldn’t be higher.”

Biden’s appearance at the banquet is in keeping with longstanding tradition for the event, in which the president and the national media gather for a roast of the US leader — an annual gala that was interrupted during the Trump administration.

“The 2024 election is in full swing and yes age is an issue,” Biden quipped. “I am a grown man, running against a six-year-old.”

If it was all laughs inside, the scene outside the hotel remained serious, with protesters at one point unfurling an enormous, multi-story Palestinian flag from a top-floor window, as others congregated on the road below holding placards, chanting and shouting from bullhorns.

Biden’s every move has been shadowed for months by protesters angry over US support for the Israeli military offensive in Gaza. He has been met by shouts of “Genocide Joe” and noisy calls for an immediate ceasefire.

More than two dozen Palestinian journalists this week issued an open letter urging their American colleagues to boycott the dinner.

“You have a unique responsibility to speak truth to power and uphold journalistic integrity,” said the letter. “It is unacceptable to stay silent out of fear or professional concern while journalists in Gaza continue to be detained, tortured and killed for doing our jobs.”

According to the New York-based Committee for the Protection of Journalists (CPJ), at least 97 journalists — including 92 Palestinians — have been killed since war erupted on October 7 with Hamas’s invasion of southern Israel. At least 16 others have been wounded.

The Washington Metropolitan Police Department told AFP it was “prepared to facilitate any safe and peaceful demonstration” but that guests would also be able to access the event.

The gala dinner and a surrounding series of society events took place as the Gaza protest movement has been spreading to colleges across the country, and as police crackdowns on some campuses have led to hundreds of arrests.

The annual dinner has been organized since 1920 by the influential White House Correspondents’ Association, which honors top reporters and awards journalism scholarships.

Norway oil giant Equinor’s profit falls on lower gas prices

Norway oil giant, Equinor profit falls, lower gas prices

OSLO: Norwegian energy giant Equinor said on Thursday that its net profit dropped by 46 percent during the first quarter, dragged down by falling gas prices.

The decrease continued last year’s trend, when the group’s net profit sank by 59 percent to $11.9 billion over 2023.

First quarter profit in 2024 stood at $2.67 billion, compared with $4.96 billion during the same period last year, the group said in a statement.

The drop was mostly due to a fall in gas prices in the United States and Europe, which fell by 38 percent and 55 percent, respectively.

Adjusted earnings, which exclude certain exceptional elements, dropped by 37 percent to $7.53 billion, it said.

Global energy giants saw their profits fall in 2023, as oil and gas prices receded after surging in the wake of Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

US stops UN from recognizing a Palestinian state through membership

US-veto-UNSC-Palestine-full-state

The United States on Thursday effectively stopped the United Nations from recognizing a Palestinian state by casting a veto in the Security Council to deny Palestinians full membership of the world body.

It vetoed a draft resolution that recommended to the 193-member U.N. General Assembly that “the State of Palestine be admitted to membership” of the U.N. Britain and Switzerland abstained, while the remaining 12 council members voted yes.

“The United States continues to strongly support a two-state solution. This vote does not reflect opposition to Palestinian statehood, but instead is an acknowledgment that it will only come from direct negotiations between the parties,” Deputy U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Robert Wood told the council.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the U.S. veto in a statement as “unfair, unethical, and unjustified.”

Palestinian U.N. Ambassador Riyad Mansour, at times emotional, told the council after the vote: “The fact that this resolution did not pass will not break our will and it will not defeat our determination. We will not stop in our effort.”

The Palestinian push for full U.N. membership came six months into a war between Israel and Palestinian militants Hamas in the Gaza Strip, and as Israel is expanding settlements in the occupied West Bank, which the U.N. considers to be illegal.

Read more: Israel attacks Iran with missiles: US media reports

Israel’s Foreign Minister Israel Katz commended the United States for casting a veto.
Addressing the 12 council members who voted in favor of the draft resolution, Israel’s U.N. Ambassador Gilad Erdan said: “It’s very sad because your vote will only embolden Palestinian rejectionism even more and make peace almost impossible.”

‘START WITH GAZA’

The Palestinians are currently a non-member observer state, a de facto recognition of statehood that was granted by the U.N. General Assembly in 2012. But an application to become a full U.N. member needs to be approved by the Security Council and then at least two-thirds of the General Assembly.

“We believe that such recognition of Palestinian statehood should not come at the start of a new process, but it doesn’t have to be at the very end of the process. We must start with fixing the immediate crisis in Gaza,” Britain’s U.N. Ambassador Barbara Woodward told the council.

The U.N. Security Council has long endorsed a vision of two states living side by side within secure and recognized borders. Palestinians want a state in the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza Strip, all territory captured by Israel in 1967.

Algeria’s U.N. Ambassador Amar Bendjama argued before the vote that admitting Palestinians to the United Nations would strengthen rather than undermine the two-state solution, adding: “Peace will come from Palestine’s inclusion, not from its exclusion.”
The Palestinian Authority, headed by Abbas, exercises limited self-rule in the West Bank. Hamas ousted the Palestinian Authority from power in Gaza in 2007.

Hamas condemned the U.S. stance in a statement and called on the international community to “support the struggle of our Palestinian people and their legitimate right to determine their destiny.”

Israel is retaliating against Hamas in Gaza over an Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel.

German Far-Right Leader Goes on Trial for Nazi Slogans

Björn Höcke, a prominent German far-right leader, appeared in court on Thursday, accused of using prohibited Nazi slogans during political gatherings. The trial is taking place in Halle.Read more
